The wind outside was different that morning.

Still.

Too still.

Taehyung sat at the edge of the porch just before sunrise, a cup of black coffee cooling in his hands, his back tense, his eyes scanning the treeline like they owed him answers.

Something was wrong.

He felt it first in his spine—an instinct honed from years of looking over his shoulder.

Then he saw it.

Barely visible.

A flash of infrared blinked against the far branch—quick, subtle, then gone.

A surveillance scan.

They found us.

---

He moved fast.

Inside.

Quiet.

Y/N was still asleep on the couch, wrapped up in the same sweatshirt he’d left her the night before. Her lips were slightly parted, her hand still curled over the blanket like she didn’t trust it to stay.

His chest squeezed.

She looked so small like this.

So human.

So far removed from the world she was being hunted by.

He crossed to the hallway in four quick steps and flicked on the security board.

Grid breach. Sector 3. Movement detected.

Heat signature: one.
Pacing. Waiting. Watching.

Professional.

Not a hunter.

Not a local.

Not just a warning.

This was someone like him.

Another ghost.

Another weapon.

---

He didn’t have time to think.

He pulled open the cabinet beneath the kitchen counter, took out the black case, flipped it open.

Two handguns. A secondary comm link. And a burner with a single number.

His thumb hovered over it.

Then stopped.

Because calling for help meant explaining why he hadn’t finished the mission.

Why the girl—the evidence—was still breathing.

And this time, HQ wasn’t going to send a warning.

They’d send a replacement.

A clean-up.

A killshot.

---

A soft voice behind him nearly startled him.

Taehyung?”

Y/N stood in the doorway, blanket still wrapped around her, eyes fogged with sleep.

He turned instantly.

You need to eat,” he said quickly, moving in front of the cabinet before she could see what was inside.
