Jay's Pov

Yesterday, I met Keifer.
His exams were over, but I still had
my assignments.

Still, we met.
He brought me some books I needed
from his town—from that famous
bookshop I visited once.

We were walking toward campus.
Not talking.
Just holding hands, quietly.
Sometimes silence feels safer than words.

Then I spoke.
"Keif?"

"Hmm?"

"Do you remember one day I told you about a  friend?"

"A friend... Ureni?" he asked.
"Yeah," I nodded.

"After nursery, I joined a school near
it. It was a new place... everything
felt unfamiliar."

"Hm"

"Ureni  sister wasn't there.
But one day, during interval, I
was at the school's children's park.
She came to see me... from the
fence outside."

"We talked. We laughed.
She rested her hand on my shoulder.
I remember that moment so
clearly."

"Then what happened?"
keifer asked .

"Some students from my class saw
us. They started blaming me,
saying they'd tell the teacher."

"Really?"

"Yeah," I said softly.
"I didn't say anything. But ureni sister... she picked up a stick from the ground and warned them to back off."

He smiled faintly.

"They ran to tell the teacher," I
continued.
"So I told her to go. To run before
the teacher came.because teacher Was
so strict. "she ran. Fell once, but kept
running.
She went home."

Keifer turned to look at me gently.

"After that, I never saw her again.
Mom said they moved to another
province."
I looked down.

"I still love her so much..."

He was quiet for a moment.
Then asked,
"didn't you try to find her?"

"I did. But I couldn't.

(A silence )

Some friendships don't stay
near us,
but... they live in our hearts.
Always."

I smiled a little.
"I still hope I'll meet her again one day."

Keifer smiled too.
"Maybe you will," he said, softly.

"Who knows if she's missing you too.."

His words were sweet, soft
comfort. Trying to make me
feel okay.

I looked at the sky.

"Even now, she remains my best
friend the One my heart loves the most."

The present - morning .
It was just a scarf.

Red, woolen, a little old. But it was
warm — and Kiefer had wrapped it
around my neck the afternoon I
forgot mine.

But that morning, it wasn't around
my neck anymore.
It was gone.

I had left it in the library the night
before. At least I thought I had.

I checked the desk. Nothing.
The lost and found? Empty.
I stood there, rubbing my arms,
a strange chill crawling over me.

"Looking for something?" a voice
came.

It was Sophie's boyfriend

He held something up, dangling
between two fingers.

My scarf🧣.

"Found it at the front gate," he said
with a grin.
"Weird place to drop it."

I took it from him slowly.
It smelled like perfume.
Not mine.

"Thanks," I murmured,
hugging it close and walking away quickly.

I didn't see him smile as I turned.

That afternoon

Sophie stayed at my home to do
Assignment together.

I came home to find Sophie curled up on the couch, watching a crime documentary with all the lights on.

"Why're you watching that?" I  asked,
pulling off her coat.

"Because it feels safer to watch something  worse than my life," Sophie muttered,
eyes red.

I didn't ask more.  just sat next to
her, wrapping her in a blanket.
Our  friendship had become a quiet
one from recent.
