Macaque laid still with Y/N cradled tightly in his arms, his head resting on her chest, listening to the soft rhythm of her heartbeat like it was the only sound anchoring him to reality. Her fingers gently ran through the fur between his ears—her touch, a silent prayer of peace after so much chaos.

But his stomach twisted.

His gut howled with a dread he couldn't name. And deep in the fold of his six ears... something—his own voice screaming—echoed through time, warped and distant, like a memory that hadn't happened yet. Was it pain? Was it fear? He didn't know. He just held her tighter, like this was the last moment he'd ever feel warmth again.

A minute passed.

He sat up abruptly.

Y/N blinked, confused. "Macaque?"

He didn't hesitate. "We need to leave. Now."

Without a word, she nodded and threw on fresh clothes. No questions. No hesitation. Just trust.

They fled through back alleys, through ancient ruins and past quiet streams, away from the city, from the mountain, from him. The sun had barely started to rise, but already the world felt darker. They were only a mile out. So close.

So close to freedom.

"Hey, bud. Where you going?"
___✭

The voice chilled their blood.

Macaque turned. His worst fear stood calmly in the middle of the path—Wukong—his golden eyes amused, his staff already materializing in his hand.

"Run," Macaque whispered, louder this time. "Run, Y/N."

She froze for a second, torn, but his voice snapped again like thunder, and she bolted.

Wukong tilted his head. "You know... it's not too late. A piece of the peach, or even just its juice—and she could be yours forever."

Macaque's heart seized.

He had thought of it. Many times. Immortality. A twisted gift.

But she said no.

She never wanted it.

"Respect her..." he growled, eyes burning, staff shaking in his grip. "You don't get to choose her fate."

Wukong smirked.

"Mortals are fragile," he taunted. "One stab. One fall. And they're gone."

Macaque hesitated. His fingers trembled.

Then Wukong plucked a strand of his fur and blew—a clone appeared—and without a second wasted, it sprinted toward the path Y/N had taken.

"No!"
___✧

Macaque conjured his own shadow clone and launched at him, the clash like lightning tearing through the trees. But Wukong wasn't done—he made another clone, and Macaque barely had time to react before he was pinned.

"Don't be a fool," Wukong hissed above him. "Give her immortality. Or she dies."

In a desperate act, Macaque screamed and summoned dozens of shadow clones, throwing them like blades. Wukong staggered back, buying Macaque just enough time to teleport.

And then he saw it.

Y/N—dangling—Wukong's clone hand wrapped tightly around her throat.

"No!"

Macaque ripped through the clone, splitting it in two with his staff. Y/N dropped to the ground like a limp doll. He scooped her up. "We're leaving. Now."

But before the next breath, a thunderous crack hit the earth.

Wukong's staff.

He had slammed it down on them both.

Macaque took the blow, shielding Y/N with his entire body. He screamed but didn't move from over her. He'd break every bone before letting her be taken.
____𖤓

"Aww," Wukong said lazily, "how sweet."

He created more clones—dozens—and they descended like wolves, slamming Macaque into the dirt, forcing him down. He thrashed and screamed and struggled.

"No! NO!"

He couldn't break free.

Y/N stood, legs shaking, ribs cracked, but still standing. Wukong's eyes narrowed. He reached for her.

"Just listen, and I'll spare you," he whispered.

She glared. Blood in her mouth. "Suck it."

She bit his hand—hard.

Wukong grunted, pulling away with a snarl. "Fine then."

"Macaque!" she cried, seeing him pinned, watching his golden eyes wide in horror.
____♱ ♱

For the first time in centuries, Macaque begged.

"Please. Wukong. Don't... don't do this. Not her. Not her."

Wukong grinned.

"Mortals are fragile."

He raised his staff—

And drove it through her stomach.

It went through her back and into the ground like a spike of divine wrath.

Macaque screamed—the same scream from his vision. His soul shattered in real time.

Wukong released her.

She fell like a doll unstrung, blood painting the earth beneath her.

The clones disappeared.

Macaque crawled—broken, breathless—dragging himself across the ground until he cradled her body in his arms. Blood. Warm and thick. He ripped off his scarf and tried to stop the bleeding, whispering desperate prayers to gods long dead.

"Stay with me," he choked. "Please, don't—don't go. You promised—you said we'd stay together."

Her voice was barely air.

"I don't regret... anything... except..."

He leaned closer. "Except what, my love?"

"...except that I never got to... marry you..."

Her hand fell from his cheek.

Gone.

Macaque screamed.

And the moonlight bore witness to his sorrow, casting shadows over two souls—one broken, and one lost—beneath a bleeding sky.

"This was the future I heard."
"The sound of my own screaming—echoing through time."
"And now I am the last voice in a river of silence."
