The dining table was a beautiful spread of a lovingly prepared breakfast-golden, crispy aloo paranthe with melting butter on top, neatly cut club sandwiches, and a warm bowl of steaming poha garnished with coriander and sev. There were glasses of chilled milkshakes in different flavors placed before the three school-going kids, while Shaurya and Rakshit had their tall glasses of fresh orange juice, and Lakshraj and Bhavika sipped their morning tea from delicate porcelain cups.
It was warm. Comforting. The kind of morning that makes a house feel like home.
As everyone dug into their food, Rihaan suddenly looked up from his plate, his sharp eyes settling on Heer. His tone was unexpectedly gentle, unlike his usual quiet indifference.
"Heer, you don't like aloo paranthe?" he asked, frowning slightly, noticing she hadn't even touched the one on her plate.
His words made the others look up too-Bhavika paused mid-sip of her tea, Shaurya glanced sideways, and even Priyansh looked a little surprised. It wasn't like Rihaan to notice something like that... let alone voice it.
Heer froze for a moment, her hand tightening around her spoon. Her eyes stayed fixed on the yellow fluff of poha in her bowl.
Aloo parantha was her favorite. Always had been.
But only her mother's. The way her Mumma kneaded the dough, the way she filled it just enough, crisped the sides, and then fed her with that warm smile.
It wasn't just a dish. It was her last memory. The final thing she ate from her mother's hands before everything changed. And now, even the smell of it made her chest heavy. She quickly shook her head, not trusting her voice, and forced a small smile.
"No... I don't like it," she said quietly, looking back down at her plate and focusing hard on her poha.
There was a small silence at the table.
Rihaan blinked but didn't push. Bhavika, sensing something unspoken in her expression, gave her a soft glance and subtly gestured the staff to remove the untouched parantha from her plate.
No one asked again.
Heer kept eating slowly, spooning the poha into her mouth, but her mind wasn't at the table anymore. It was back in a small, sunlit kitchen... where her mother stood humming while flipping paranthas on a tawa, smiling as if nothing bad could ever touch their little world.
But that world was gone now.
And so was the taste of her mother's cooking.
She blinked fast, brushing away the sting in her eyes before anyone noticed.
This house was good. These people were kind. But some emptiness... it just stayed. No matter how lovely the breakfast or how warm the tea smelled.
"Mummy, milkshake nahi peena..." Priyansh whined dramatically, staring at the tall glass of milkshake like it was some kind of ancient punishment.
(Mom, I don't want to drink milkshake)
