Aaron sat outside Sam's place. He checked himself in the mirror before she got in the car.
"Good morning." She said hopping in next to him.
"Good morning, you look as amazing as always." This was the first time he had ever seen Sam not in a dress. He had specifically told her to wear something she wouldn't mind getting messy in. She was in a pair of well worn jeans, a Harvard sweatshirt and a pair of red rubber boots.
"Thanks." She flashed him a smile. "Where are we going?" She added. He hadn't told her, he wanted it to be a surprise.
"We are driving outside the city to check out this corn maze a friend told me about." He turned to she her reaction, worried for a second that she might not think it was as great an idea as he thought it was.
"I haven't been to a corn maze in forever." She looked excited, so Aaron calmed down.
"Alright, now, you have the most important job. You're in charge of the music. This is important, and you should know that I will judge you on all songs you pick." Aaron handed her his Ipod.
He was joking, but he was really curious what type of music Sam listened to. His Ipod had almost any type of music anyone would want to listen to, so he waited for her to make a choice.
The first song she picked surprised him. "An old soul?" He asked as The Mamas and The Papas played in the background.
"A little bit." She smiled. She got to work making a playlist for the ride, and then they relaxed for the rest of the ride. Hit after hit playing while they chatted.
"I am very surprised at your taste in music." Aaron told her. They had arrived at the maze and Aaron was parking the car.
"It's the type of music my dad likes to listen to in the car, and I guess it kind of stuck." She was tying her long dark hair into a pony tail, using the rear view mirror to help her. As her hair swung Aaron caught the scent of her shampoo, it was sweet, like flowers. It was something that he thought he would enjoy smelling everyday.
"Are you ready?" He asked, putting his sunglasses on his nose.
"Yup. Lets do this." She looked as excited as he felt.
As they walked through the maze they talked. It was different then the flirty conversations they had had. Aaron told Sam about his parents, and his family. She told him about her mom's death, and about her dad.
They held hands as they walked. Aaron had been nervous about taking her hand, and had gently bumped his hand into hers a few times before finally taking it in his.
"This maze is impossible." Sam sighed.
"I agree." Aaron told her. He noticed that they were close to an area where you could leave the maze. "Why don't we go out here, get some lunch from the snack stand, and try again after?" He suggested.
"That sounds like an amazing plan." She let him lead her out of the maze and over to the snack stand.
Aaron ordered a hot dog for himself, and after convincing her to let him pay for her, a cheeseburger for Sam. She agreed after negotiating with him so that she could pay for the drinks and a box of popcorn. Based off of her persuasion skills, he gathered she must be a pretty great lawyer.
"Why law?" He asked once they had settled into a picnic table.
"It's sort of a long, and not so happy story." She said.
He shrugged, "We have time, and I kind of want to hear it."
Sam put her cheeseburger down on the table. "When I was younger, I had this friend and her parents weren't very nice to her. They'd bully her and stuff and it just wasn't a good situation. Because of her house life, she got into some not so great stuff, and ended up in juvie. When she got out, she petitioned to not go back with her parents, and instead go live with her aunt, but she didn't have any support and she was forced to go back with her parents. One night her dad was drunk and beat her up so bad that she got permanent brain damage. That's when I decided I wanted to help people that could help themselves. My parents were amazing and I wanted to make sure that all kids can get the type of childhood I had, and not one like my friend had."
"Holy shit, Sam. I'm sorry. How old were you?" He reached across the table and took her hand.
"Fifteen."
"You're an amazing person, do you know that?" He said, making her smile.
"Thanks. Lets hurry up and eat, I want to beat that maze."
A few hours later they were back in Aaron's car, headed back to the city. Sam was asleep in the passenger seat, Aaron's jacket draped over her like a blanket.
He pulled up in front for her town house and stopped the car. "Sam, wake up. You're home." He whispered, gently shaking her shoulder. She opened her eyes, and stretched her arms out.
"Sorry I fell asleep." She said, pulling his jacket tighter around her.
"That's alright. You're pretty cute when you sleep." He teased.
Sam rolled her eyes, and handed him back the jacket. "Walk me to my door?" She asked.
They both got out of the car, and Aaron took her hand again.
"I had a lot of fun with you today." She told him.
"Same." They walked up her front step.
"I'd invite you in, but it's pretty messy in there." She said, fiddling with her keys. She was looking up at him with her big, beautiful eyes.
"That's alright. Next time." Aaron wanted to kiss her so bad, but wasn't sure if she would want that. He decided to go for it and lend in to her. He gently cupped her cheek and pulled her face to his. He pressed his lips to hers, pulling her close with his free hand. She kissed him back, her lip were as soft as they looked, and kissing her was even better then he had imagined it to be.
A car horn honked near them, startling them both away from each other.
"Good night." Sam said. She unlocked her front door and went in, leaving Aaron standing outside on her front stoop.
