"Don’t you think this is too much?" Adam asked as he sat with his co-workers in the office.
"What is? Cigar?" A Nazi official asked obliviously offering him one.
"The rations, how are they meant to work, if they're barely getting fed?"
He rose from his chair, looking to his colleges laughing; Adam sat confused, “What is it?"
"Not for much longer." He smirked."Concentration camps are being built as we speak." The other stated.
"Wait, forced labor camps, but why?" Adam said.
"Are you an idiot? We just call them that... " Robert added, who he once would called him his friend, they both became friends during Hitler Youth, but now he realised that the people surrounded him had become strangers to him.Adam stared at them, in disbelief not saying a word. Maybe he was so much in shock at what they were saying; he didn’t know what to say.
"Okay, you really are as thick as you look... It's like pigs for the slaughter... Give them less food, treat them like shit and they slowly die.. Or it would be just easier, to get them all together and kill them." He explained coldly.
"Has Hitler confirmed this?" Adam replied finally.
"Well, he's building them, so when they're built. Yeah he'll soon let us know. Then we'll burn this whole place down."
Adam looked white as he turned away and walked out, 'soon', how long was soon? He couldn’t sit back and watch his friends fade, he can’t keep passing bodies in the street, he didn’t want to live this way. He had to do something about it, even if it meant going against the Fürher.
"Father... Father, wake up." I said to him, he had been ill for a few days now, but I thought he would of been okay by now. He's told everyone in the room, to stay away from him.
He couldn’t move, he laid pale and stiff, "I'm fine. Just don’t come any closer."
He began to cough frantically, tears came to my eyes, “You’re not you... You have all spots on you, you got a disease don’t you? I'll try to get help, there's a cure isn’t there? I could ask Adam!"
"He won’t help, the Nazis may get suspicious. It's fine, at least I can die in vain. Instead of in front of them."
"No, father please, I'll get help! I'll get... Help."
He closed his eyes, “Shush, just shush, darling."Father didn’t speak after that; I cried his name over and over. He didn’t respond, he was gone.
I walked out into the streets, collapsing into the middle of the road in tears; people stared at us walking by.
It was dark now; I looked to the sky as I rose to my feet. I was a different person now. I was stronger, but I never felt so broken. I prepared for what was to come, I knew what was to wait me, at least I hope I did.
"Amit, someone may see you." A voice said.
"I... I don’t care anymore." I said without even turning round, “Let them, it will happen eventually."Suddenly, someone grabbed my arm and pulled me quickly along the streets, down an alleyway, which I never even knew existed.
"What... What happened?"
"My father gave up, gave up the will, the hope to live. He left us, he left this world.. I wanted to help him, if only I noticed sooner and saved up to for a vaccine or something!!" I said trembling into tears. My chin was gently raised, I looked to see Adam. He was so gentle, I wasn’t use to a Nazis being gentle.
His eyes were as intesely passionate as they were in my dream last night. The way he held my chin up, he was so close. I thought he was going to kiss me, but he couldn’t, he wouldn’t dare.
"He... Died of Typhus?" Adam asked sadly.
I nodded, “It’s spreading so fast, I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t get it."
He rolled up my sleeves to check, he caught me off guard, was he worried if I had it or worried if he was going to catch it?"You will be okay, don’t worry. You can go the doctors and get it sorted. We can’t." I told him hopelessly.
"Well I will get it sorted for you, I'll try to smuggle some vaccines in-"
"No! You'll get into trouble and.. Sorry, yes but not just for me please for everyone if possible."
He nodded looking round,"Yeah okay, I’ll need bigger pockets then."We stood looking at each other, I looked away quickly,"Yeah it looks suspicious if we stay here too long.. I need to find Tomas.."
I walked away and looked back to him,"Oh, Adam... Thank you."
He smiled faintly, “No problem at all."Tomas was brave and strong, mostly drained from the day’s work and shortage of food. That he just managed to let father's death sink in. He really is becoming a young man, but also he knew what was to come of father.
The Nazis came in, without our consent and took the body away.
"Where are you taking him? Wait!!" I cried as I chased after them towards the gates. They ignored me closing the gates behind them, tears of anger bubbling up in my eyes.
I screamed,"Father! Father!! Please! Please don't leave us!!"
All the sudden a gun shot was fired, it was only metres away from me. I looked to a find a Nazi Guard, called Robert, pointing his gun at me.I fearlessly looked him in the eye, as anger erupted inside of me.
My words unable to come from my mouth, "W..What..You..!!"
"Stop it, Wilson." A voice ordered.Robert faced Adam,"Oh Hans, you can’t give me orders."
"Don’t waste your bullets." He told him firmly.I rushed away quickly, the boy looked across to me and back to Adam, “You... And... Her?"
Adam's eyes were as cold as ice, he could tell, “If one of your classmates was here, you would probably not want the same fate."
"But you've sworn to the Fürher...” He replied disapprovingly.
"Yes I did, but we never sworn to watch harmless people die... Did we?"
Adam walked away; knowing if anyone found out, not only his job, but his life could be on the line.
