Chapter 11 - Hiding

Start from the beginning

Karin smiled as she looked back at me and Tomas, “Were have got food and water, even a working toilet! We can’t leave until we know the trucks have stopped coming and if we did it’ll have to be before sunset.”

“Is it okay if we have a wash?” A mother asked nervously as she held her toddler little boy.

I peered over as I watched his face soften, “Sure, don't worry if you make a mess. I won’t be living here for much longer anyway.”

The woman hurried upstairs, Tomas walked ahead into the dining room where everyone was eating.

I looked back at Adam, he nodded, “Go take care of you and your brother.”

He turned to head back out the door to the ghettos; I took his hand quickly.

“You’ve done enough, I don't want you getting caught and...” My voice trailed off as I lowered my gaze.

“Hey look at me.” Adam reassured, “I’ll be back soon.”

My heart fluttered as he stared into my blue eyes, his expression was serious.

The way he looked at me was as if I was the most beautiful person he laid eyes on. I was surprised. Since I appeared to look the worse I have been in my life and the last person who uses to look at me like that was my father.

I was always use to being seen as rodent or simply not even a same level as a human being, that’s how Jews are mean to be viewed as by men in that Nazi uniform. Yet this was different, it always had been different with Adam. Under that Nazi uniform and without my Star of David, were two people who were very much in love.

His kissed my cheek before disappearing behind the tall wall, I felt the need to be with him, something was pulling me towards him like gravity. A sudden rush of eruption ran through my body, as I quickly chased after him moments later.

“Amit..!” Tomas called.

Karin followed me quickly, “What are you doing, if you go back-“
I stared at her in the eye, “I want to help, it’s the least I can do!”

I hurried down the alleyways, I couldn’t find him. I was certain I would have been able to catch up to him.

As I turned the corner my piercing fear struck me as I saw a man stood in a Nazis uniform. It was too late, he saw me and it was the same guy who told me to stay away from Adam.

A twisted smile emerged on his face, “Ah Adam’s little Jew.”

I wanted to run, but I couldn’t move, I was so terrified but something inside of me was stirring. Even if I did run his gun pointed at me as he approached me.

“What makes you think I won’t shoot you on the spot right now?” He hissed.

“A…Adam.” I uttered.

He tightened his grip on my hair, “You no different from the rest of them, you should go with them. Have a nice little trip to Treblinka...”
“Yeah where you’ll work us to death.” I yelled.
“Some won’t even get a chance to work...”

I stared eyes, “I’m not scared of you... I’d rather die being a Jew than die a Nazis, at least then I won’t get sent to hell.”
“YOU!” He yelled as he held his finger on the trigger.

“Robert.” A voice said.

I looked up to see Adam stood looking pale, his eyes were widened, Robert frowned, “What’s wrong with you!”
“Please, Robert...” Adam’s tone grew serious.
“Since when have you been so soft? Was all the training, pledges, marches, did that all mean nothing to you-“

“It did when I thought we were doing well, for our country, our future. But look round, look what our so called Great Germany has created. Murder, crime, discrimination.”

Robert grew silent, his hand began to shake as he held the gun against me, I witnessed Adam finally break free from his Nazi chains.

“I use to think everyone was so blind, so emerged in the brain washing of our surroundings” He explained, “But now I see, were all just playing along so in denial, the choice to stay alive but watch the suffering of others, or stand for what’s right but be amongst the suffering!”

These young men in Nazi uniforms, forced to grow up and follow orders. All this time terrified boys hoping to not put a foot wrong? I didn’t feel sorry for any of them, they slept with food in their bellies whilst most of us didn’t, but I had a better understanding that the human inside was locked deep inside.

Robert loosened his grip and whispered, “If you weren’t such an not so ugly girl, I wouldn’t have given you any mercy.”
My eyes widened, I ran towards Adam as Robert lowered his gun. Adam sighed with relief and gave him a quiet respectful nod.

Robert half smiled twisted, “You’re going to be a dead man Hans, and you’re a fool.”

“Wilson, I’d rather be a fool than a murdering fool.”

Adam turned to walk down the alleyway back out to the street, I looked up at Adam, “You really got good timing.”
His face was pale and his brown eyes were tense, he quickly turned round pulling me along by the arm.

“If I was any later you would have been dead and everything I done would have been for nothing.” Adam told me firmly.
“But you still saved the others-“
“I did all this for you and you just ran back even though you knew it was dangerous.” He snapped angrily.
“But I wanted to stay with you and help-“
“You can’t help, you’re a Jew if someone saw you, and you will only be killed or sent to die!!” Adam stopped in his tracks and looked down at me, as we reached the door to his confided house.

I pulled my arm away from his grasp, “You sound just like them.”

My eyes full of tears as I reached back with the others; Karin hugged me close letting out a sigh of relief. We followed behind Adam with caution led us through the streets as the skies grew blue.

“Are you okay? I thought you got taken.” She asked me.
I remained silent as I wiped my tears; Adam diverted his eyes away from me quickly.

“Come on, don't look back and stay together.”
