"A little birdie told me that you were thinking about joining the council." Cameron whispered in my ear and I lazily opened my eyes to look at him.
"Well, that birdie needs to learn how to mind their business." I mumbled and closed my eyes again.
There was movement by my side and the table squeaked under a sudden pressure. "Are you?"
I hummed and stayed silent. I felt a tendril of my hair move and I blindly swatted his hand away. "Don't touch my hair ever again in your life."
"Why not?" He asked teasingly.
"It's a rule. Never, even if you want to, touch a black girls hair unless she gives specific permission." Cameron scoffed and my lips twitched up into a tiny smile.
"That's stupid."
"It's not an official rule but you have to abide by it." I decided sleeping at the picnic table with Cameron around was useless so I sat up.
The air wasn't freezing but it was cold enough to make me shiver. I snuggled deep into my jacket and curled my fists to maintain my warmth.
"Then I guess I'll obey it if you say so." I raised an eyebrow as I heard the noticeable change in his tone.
Before I could speak on it, he turned his gaze to something behind me. I turned in that direction and saw my friends walking my way. Justin, in particular, was sporting an displeased look when he saw Cameron with me.
Cameron leaned towards my ear again with a teasing grin. "It looks like lover boy and company arrived. I should make my exit."
He brushed his lips against my ear and I jumped, punching him in the arm. He practically skipped away from me as I pulled a sneer onto my face to hide my embarrassment. "Asshole." I muttered.
"Were we interrupting something?" Drew asked wiggling his eyebrows as they sat down.
Zay slapped his arm and gestured to stop. Izzy scoffed and frowned. "I don't like him. I don't think you should be flirting around with him when-" She yelped and Justin glared at her.
"First, we weren't flirting. Second, I was trying to take a nap before he decided to mess with me. Third, ever heard of free will?" Orlan whistled and Chris snickered by his side causing Izzy to glare at them.
"That kiss didn't seem friendly, though." Drew started to grin slyly.
"Kiss?" The group echoed and my face grew hot from embarrassment.
"It wasn't a kiss!" I squeaked defensively.
"Um, guys..." Zay said nervously glancing at Justin.
They ignored him and kept spewing comments all over the place. However, there was one comment from Orlan that set off the spark for total destruction. "So, are you going to date him? He's hot."
Justin, who was silent the entire time, tensed and slowly stood. "I gotta take a leak."
I watched as he left, glaring at the ground. I put my head in my hands and groaned. "You guys..." I whined.
There was two slaps mixed with Orlan's and Drew's sounds of pain. "I told you to stop but did anyone listen to me? No because you're all dumbasses." Zay complained.
"Destiny, maybe you should talk to him before he does something reckless." Chris said softly.
I smiled weakly at him and stood up. "Yeah, you're right. Thank you."
As I was walking away, I heard Izzy whisper: "I got a bad feeling about this."
My feet dragged heavily as I walked across the field and towards the school building. Every step was harder to take but I pushed myself. I opened the gym door and the cool air conditioned breeze hit my face along with the stench of sweat. It was the boys gym class in the gym today and I immediately became self conscious when all eyes turned to me but I saw Cameron and relaxed. I speed walked the outside ring of the gym at a fast pace, eyes focused on the gym doors just out of my reach.
A guy stood in my way and smirked down at me. I tried to step around him but he wouldn't budge. "You're always so quiet. I've always wondered what your voice sounded like especially when..." He leaned closer with a disgusting sneer. "Well, you know."
I was about to retort when a basketball went flying across the court and hit him across the face before bouncing to the other side of the gym. He glared at the perpetrator and I looked, too. Cameron's face was neutral but his eyes were livid and left no room for objection. "I think we should be getting back to playing, don't you?"
The guy glanced at me before moving over to where the other guys were. I mouthed a 'thank you' to Cameron and he nodded. I disappeared through the gym doors and let out a satisfying sigh as I stepped into the hallway. Unfortunately, the heavy feeling came back and my heart began to skip. I traveled slowly down the hallways and listened out for his voice.
When I was about to give up, I heard it. His voice. No, his laugh. A smile spread on my face and I sprinted down the hallway, taking a sharp turn. My smile faded off of my face as I felt the air leave my lungs when I saw that he wasn't alone. Or rather I was bothered by who he was with. No, what they were doing definitely took the cake.
He was lip locked with Ashley motherfucking Larough. Anger and sadness started to build up into my chest but then I remembered something. He wasn't mine. My fists unclenched from my sides and hung loosely. My eyes slowly burned with tears as I watched him touch her like she was the only one in the world he cared about.
I turned around and covered my mouth as a pathetic sob full of sorrow threatened to burst from my throat. I hastily wiped my face even though it did no good against my constant downpour of tears. I walked away and stuck my trembling hands in my pockets.
I sniffled and hid my face as I heard footsteps heading my way. The footsteps stopped short but I kept walking. "Destiny?"
I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping silently he would just keep walking. The footsteps continued and got nearer when I was suddenly turned around. "What the fuck happened? Did someone-"
I looked up at Cameron, eyes glistened with fresh tears. "Please just...get me out of here. I want to leave. I can't-" I let out a broken cry and he tucked me between his arm and torso.
"Alright, we got like three fourths of the day left so I don't think they would care if we skipped. It's pep rally day, anyway." He whispered and led me towards the exit.
I nodded into his jacket and let out a stuttering breath. We walked an easy pace to his car and we got in. I shivered from the sudden change of air outside and Cameron took off his jacket.
"Take it." I grabbed it and snuggled against it like a blanket. The tears wouldn't stop and I just needed something.
"Look, I don't know what happened but I don't like to see you sad. It makes me uncomfortable so I'm going to take you somewhere you can smile. At least for a little while." He said as he pulled out of the parking lot.
"Okay." I whispered as another tear ran down my face.
