I lay in a state of shock. First that I actually got (I can’t believe to say the word) 'pregnant' that night Marshall left; but even more so that it was over before I knew it started.
Cake brought me home later that day, while I was still lost in a daze. She asked me a million times if I was okay, of course, for her sake, I said I was.
I did chores around the tree house the rest of the day, trying to keep myself busy, keeping my mind busy with the most menial of tasks I could find. Sweeping the dust from every book, corner, trinket, anywhere.
The sun set silently to a cloudless night without my notice. Cake came down looking for me, finding me in the treasure room, polishing various goblets, swords, jewels and pieces of gold. "Fionna, get to bed, its midnight" she whines, tired herself.
"Can't." I simply reply, not stopping my actions.
"Baby,"
"No." I say as the final word, turning my attention away from her.
She is silent a moment, and she exhales, "Baby, I know you're hurting, but this isn’t the way to deal with it. Get out, hang out with FP, get some sleep." I feel her paw on my shoulder.
I stay distant, not looking up.
"Fine, but we're doing something about this in the morning." She yawns and heads back upstairs.
The night wears on uneventfully, moving from relic to relic, all my mind power focusing on the item in my hand.
Suddenly I feel a shift in the air, a disturbance, bringing me out of my focused state. My senses heighten. I turn around in a whirl only to be met with lips pressed against mine. I inhale in shock and find the scent that fills the gap in my heart immediately. I breath out my first free breath in what has felt like a lifetime, wrapping my arms around his neck to bring myself as close to him as humanly possible. We collapse onto the floor, my back resting on a pile of gold and jewels.
"Fi," Marshall moans into my mouth between kisses. I try as hard as I can to be mad at him, but I can't, can't help the silent tears streaming down my face.
Marshal notices and breaks away from our embrace, "What's wrong?" He asks, concerned. He lifts my chin up to make my blue eyes meet his red orbs.
I open my mouth to tell him about the horrible events of the day, but I stop myself, not able to get the words off my tongue. "I'm just so happy to see you." I say, not untruthfully, just not the whole story.
A sad smile crosses his face, "I'm sorry. I promise to never leave you again."
I try to keep him talking, "But what about the Nightosphere?" I ask, truly curious.
He sighs, "It took longer than I thought it would." He starts; I can see the sorry in his eyes.
"What did you do?" I encourage.
He looks at me and lets out a small exhale, "My dad used to teach me about the ways of the times before us, that government wasn't always the power house it always seems to be. He used words like 'democracy' and 'representatives'." He pauses a moment to judge my reaction. My face is blank, just waiting for him to continue, so he does, "So I picked a range of people in the Nightosphere, put them together and put them in charge, representing different creatures and classes; they will make decisions."
"So where does that leave you?" I ask, still concerned for his birthright.
He shrugs, I'm still in charge over them but they won't need me unless it’s a really big deal or whatever. Imma, whatsit, a figurehead almost, the new face of the Nightosphere."
I smile, "Sounds like a pretty good deal to me," I bring him closer to me. He lifts me up onto his lap and cradles me in his arms, my head resting in the crook of his cool neck.
"So, what'd I miss while I was gone?" He asks, I knew it was coming. He rocks me gently back and forth in his lap.
I think, "Well, I saved some folks, adventured, the usual." I answer non-specifically.
He is silent moment, as if taking in my answer and possibly deciphering if I’m telling the whole truth. I quickly change the subject then, "We still need a new house, I kinda forgot this whole time." I cut in.
He shakes away his thoughts and focuses on me, "That's fine, now we can find one together." He makes small kisses along my neck. I feel sleep start to over take me, drifting off right there in his arms.
But this was exactly what I was trying to prevent.
I sleep deeply against my own will, my mind running wild. A dark haired, blue eyed, baby, giggling, wriggling in my arms. Marshall comes from behind me and kisses the babe on the head, "She's beautiful." He sighs before kissing me on the cheek.
But then I’m shredded in half by a familiar stab of pain in my stomach. I look down to my arms, now covered in sticky blood. I cry for Marshall but he never comes, leaving me in the darkness alone.
"Fi!"
I’m shook awake, the clatter of coins reminding me where I was. As I get my bearings I still find myself where I last remember, in Marshall's lap. Except now I spy a faint light coming from beneath the front door and Marshall's face is one of concern. "Bad dream?" He asks, pulling me closer.
I take note of my racing heart and the sweat beaded on my forehead, "Was it that obvious?" I try to play off, tucking a damp strand of hair back from my face.
He doesn't play into my joking tone, "Fi, you were crying and screaming and wouldn't wake up. What happened in the dream?" He asks, concerned.
I wipe my face with my sleeve, knowing I must look like a wreck. "It was the Lich, she was after me." I say plainly, knowing well if I didn't say something Marshall would just be more suspicious.
This seems to satisfy his concerns, hugging me tighter, "It was just a nightmare," he calms, "she can't hurt you now."
I nod, letting him hold me for a moment of peace, letting him think, for now, everything was right in the world; but I knew this was only the beginning of the dreams to come.
