I cut corners around the ice castle, trying to locate the source of Marshall's outburst. My feet occasionally slide beneath me on slick parts of ice, I grab onto the walls just before I fall. "Marshall?!" I call through the labyrinth that the castle has become.
"Fionna!" He yells from close by. I follow the yell into a room with him kneeling next to a crumpled Simone on the floor.
"What happened?" I kneel down on her other side. Her hands clutch at her head, white knuckled, her eyes like blue ice, staring straight ahead unblinkingly.
"I don’t know," he replies, panic on the edge of his voice, "I just found her like this. She won't speak to me." He shakes her shoulder a bit, trying to knock her out of it.
I lean over, trying to look her in the eyes, "Simone?! Simone, can you hear me? It's Fionna and Marshall, please tell us what’s wrong!" I beg. But nothing escapes her quivering lips. "Glob it!" I mutter under my breath. I try to calm myself, to focus on what’s going on.
There's a splitting 'crack', the suddenness of it shaking my bones. I turn to see a massive fissure in the ice wall opposite us. I turn back to Simone, back to the wall, to her, wall, Marshall, "She's staring at that wall, there must be something about it." I figure. I get up and move to the cracked, ice wall. I look in the crack, "It's hollow! There must be something inside!" I take a step back and start ramming my shoulder into the wall. The ice tinkles with the sounds of tiny cracks forming every time I hit it.
As I rear myself up for another go at it, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I step aside as Marshall transforms partially into his bat form. In one go, the wall collapses, revealing a tiara, glowing eerily.
Simone screams bloody hell, clutching at her hair, writhing. The storm rages louder outside, the winds picking up and the sound of hail scratching at the ice walls.
"It's the tiara!" I yell above the noise, "It has to be destroyed!" I reach for my sword, only to remember I left it at home with all my other stuff. I move for the tiara anyway, knowing I have to do something.
"No!" Simone cries as I pull it out of its entombment in the ice.
Just holding it sends a current through my bod, I can feel it, hear the whispers of the power of ice and snow...power...control... safety...
"Fi, snap out of it!" I'm being shaken by Marshall, trying to pull the tiara out of my hands, his own hand covered with a rag, creating a barrier.
I become lucid, immediately letting go of the tiara, "I'm, I'm, sorry,"
He ignores me, too focused on the tiara. He kneels down and starts bashing it on the floor in attempt to break it. I look outside and see the storm actually slowing down, and more hopefully, see Simone blink and her become in control again.
Marshall grunts with each hit he inflicts on the tiara. Simone walks over to him and places a hand on his shoulder to stop, "That's enough for now." He stands, reluctantly handing over the tiara to Simone's open hand. "You've only damaged it out for now; it will become very active again at any moment."
Marshall rips it from her hands and begins pounding it again. Simone sighs in frustration and pulls him up by his collar, "You cannot destroy a Gem of Power, it is impossible; you are only delaying the inevitable." She explains with a heavy heart, hopelessness seeping into her voice.
"No! There has to be a way!" I can sense the desperateness in his voice. If he was sad when his mom died, I don't think he could go on if Simone reverted back and forgot him, again. "Where did you get it? We can start looking for answers."
She plays along, thinking back, "Uhh...oh yes, Northern Scandinavia; an old dock worker had it for sale after it washed up on the shore one day." She looks off distantly, recalling the memory, "The greatest mistake of my life, buying that thing." She looks with disgust at the tiara.
Marshall puts his arm around her, "Yeah, but without that tiara you wouldn't have survived the Mushroom War and I probably would have died on my own." He points out, trying to show her the bright side of things.
"Yeah, and once we figure out how to destroy the gems of power it'll all be fine." I add in. "So, did you take any notes on the tiara when you got it? Maybe there are legends we could look up about all the gems of power, books at the library we could check out?" I suggest, really egger to figure this out.
She nods in agreement, "Yes, yes, that is a good start. Why don’t I go through my old journals and you guys can check out the library." she suggests.
I nod and head for the door but Marshall speaks up, "Actually, I think I’m going to stay here with you, Simone, just to be safe."
Simone says, "Oh really, Marshall, I think I can look after myself, right Fionna?" she looks to me for confirmation.
I shrug, "It is probably for the best that he stays here with you, just in case." I agree, feeling slightly sorry for Simone and our over protection of her.
She sighs, "Alright, fine, but I’m warning you Marshall, there may be things you wish not to see in my study." she says ominously.
He smirks, "I’m just as old as you, I’ve seen my fair amount of unpleasurable things." and with that he follows her deeper into the castle.
I, myself, make my way to the front entrance. I peek outside and see the snow has stopped, at least for now. I take a tentative step into the snow, solid. I keep walking but I make a wrong step off the path and immediately sink down, falling through the snow. A tunnel of snow forms around me, towering over me. I fight it but eventually the snow packs enough to slow me to a stop.
I take a few deep breaths; they vaporize in front of my face. I think about calling for Marshall, but figure the snow would just snuff every word I yell out.
I'll figure my own way out.
So I dig my hands into the cold snow walls, trying to get a good grip to start my way up the soaring 10 foot tall tube of snow to reach the surface. I put my weight on my arms but fall flat on my butt, the snow not dense enough to hold my weight.
'Thinkthinkthink', "Ah," I start scooping snow from the walls and packing it under my feet, "Might take awhile..." I say to myself, but go on anyway. My fingers start to sting, from the cold snow, and shake with shivers like the rest of my body. The air seems to thin, I make my breaths shallower to compensate as I scoop on.
I take an arm full of snow from the wall, only to have the whole wall of snow above it collapse and bury me. I let out a yelp as I'm completely covered, head to toe, in snow. I attempt to almost 'swim' my way up and out of it, but getting no progress other than hollowing out the places my legs and arms were. 'Why did I have to storm out of the house this morning?' I question myself angrily, I keep kicking and trying to get a grip on something, but this ain't cream and it's not churning into butter anytime soon.
"Fionna?! Fionna?!" Marshall's muffled voice sounds above, seeming so distant. "Fionna, if you can hear me, make a sound, anything."
I open my mouth and it gets filled with snow, choking me for a moment. "Marshhhh,..." I yell but die off, running out of air; and what I did get out sounded like whispers, even to me. I thrash around to make an air pocket, not very successfully. I ball my hands into fists and bring my body together, freezing. Knowing it’s probably my last try, I gather a lung full of air and scream, just scream. 'Why me, why do these things always happen to me?' I curse in my mind.
I close my eyes and focus on what warmth I have left, my heart beat thud in my veins, the cold air entering and leaving my lungs; I drift.
There's a crunching sound above me, and just as that fact registers I'm plucked from my icy grave into the harsh light, and finding the comforting touch of a friend.
"Fionna, Fionna, can you hear me? Open your eyes," Marshall holds me against his chest; even his undead bod is warmer than mine. I crack my eyes open, his worried red orbs meeting my blue ones. I look down and find us hovering high above the snow line, making our way back to the castle. "I heard you yell, came out here and it was just a sea of white, nothing. Anyway, let's go in and get you warmed up." He snuggles me closer to him, "Plus we may not need you to go to the library after all, we found something."
