My Review :
This is an elegantly wrought chapter of fitting length full of beautiful important detail that draws the reader so much more into being in the story. The loving attention paid to detail is one of the hallmarks of Nimruzir's writing, & causes it to be like the gold that stands out from the dross in the sea of fanfiction writing, in my opinion :P
This chapter is quite capable of reducing the reader to a blubbering mess - it did for me, *sniff sniff sniff*. I love stories that do that to me, due to the emotive connection that the writing is able to forge, something that the author has quite successfully done. Love the touching realism & the veritable storm of emotions that comes to pass in the meeting between Thranduil & Legolas. And also the tension of trying to keep Legolas' presence undiscovered in the healing halls, something that Thranduil puts an end to in this chapter as necessary step that has to be taken to move forward, painful though it may be.
It's really interesting how we can picture Thranduil physically more clearly through Legolas' eyes, much more than in the earlier chapters. For some reason, it has been easy to picture Legolas' beauty & the reactions to his similarity to grandfather, & quite forget that Thranduil would have to be beautiful too. Love how it was through the father-son bond that Thranduil knew it was Legolas, & funny how he calls his warrior name of Hwindo a "nickname" even though he knows it means the Whirling Warrior. I would love to read of how he sees firsthand that nope, it ain't no nickname but a true & fitting descriptionof his warrior son (yay, a fighting scene! :P). Thranduil's first impressions of Legolas are sweet - his hands, his hair, his voice. *aww*.
One thing that is consistent, is that Thranduil & his advisors & guards also all believe that Legolas is in a lot danger right now with his return to Greenwood, hence he is assigned a personal bodyguard, Dorhinen, who was also his grandfather's bodyguard - & whom, from the story, appears in need of redemption as Oropher was killed under his watch.
Looking forward to Glorfindel & the Company & Mithrandir reaching Greenwood & Legolas. Hope Lainion is ok! There was a not-so-subtle hint how Thranduil might be worried about how Glorfindel might steal Legolas' love that he himself so desperately desires when Legolas mentioned that they had grown dear to each other... quite a natural reaction on Thranduil's part. Glad that wise Glorfindel had already encouraged Legolas to be open to his ada king. Also looking forward to Thranduil & Glorfindel having a private talk about Legolas, Oropher & all Greenwood matters, that promises to be very interesting.
And what's with Thranduil's ring besides the fact that it gave his identity away in the healing halls? A large green emerald, rough-cut, wild & so very bright, like the elf who gifted it to him. Hmm... so many things to look forward to as the story unfolds further. So much intrigue, undercover, "mess", etc. Love it! :)
