"Mom, I can explain--" I started, my shoulders beginning to tremble as I waited for her to yell or hit me.
"No! I specifically told you not to bring boys home! Why can't you just listen?!" she screamed at me. Colten stared at her in shock, as if such a pretty woman couldn't be mean to a quiet girl like me.
"I'm sorry, mom--" tears came down.
"And look! He's eating our food!" she yelled. "Why are you such an idiot!?"
"He was hungry, mom, I was just being--"
"Nice?! You have to stop that! People will take advantage of you for that!" she took a deathly step closer.
"Leave her alone!" Colten roared, anger contorting his features as he stepped in front of me protectively.
"Get out of my house. Now." mom's voice was deathly quiet.
When Colt didn't move an inch she yelled: "Security!"
The guard ran in, grabbing Colten by the shoulders and taking him away.
I ran after them, my mom stepping into my path. "Let him go."
"Colten! I'm sorry!" I yelled, pushing against my mother but considering that I was shorter and not as strong, she was unmovable.
"Your grounded, Alice-Mae, get up to your room now. And if you dare disobey, we'll move and you won't ever see your friends again." she threatened, and I suddenly remembered why I hated her in the first place.
I held my head low and walked away, heading to the stairs as slowly as I could. Why did I ever let Colten come here? Why let him in the gate in the first place?
My heart was burning with fury at my mom, and it was breaking because this was my moms way of saying that I couldn't hang out with Colten.
Once in my room I changed into pj's and climbed into bed, but sleep wouldn't come. At least not until I made sure I'd finished absolutely all my homework.
Even after that though, I could only think of Colten. What would my mom say tomorrow? Would I even see her? Why was she home so early?
I sighed, why couldn't mom just stay in the Bahamas? All I wanted to do was get to know Colten and now I couldn't hang out with him here.
I soon fell into a deep sleep, my dreams filled with Colten and school.
~~~~Beep!
Beep!
Beep!
My alarm clock blared, ruffling me from my nightmare.
I got up and turned off my alarm, before going to my closet and putting on jeans and a T-shirt. Then I grabbed my messenger bag, stuffing my homework into it, before slipping on socks and heading into the bathroom to brush my hair and teeth.
When I headed downstairs, I avoided the kitchen and began my morning walk to school. It was quiet out, no birds sang, there was no wind, it was like the calm before the storm. But the sun still shone brightly, just like Chloe.
Once at school, I went to my locker in the Math/Science building and spun in my combination.
My locker open, I put my messenger bag in and grabbed my morning textbooks, when I noticed the lavender colored paper taped on my mirror that hung on the back of my locker.
I grabbed it, I knew it was from Chloe. She was the only one who knew my lock combo and we used lavender paper to talk to each other since I didn't have a cell phone.
I opened up the letter, books forgotten and left on my locker floor. It read:
'Ali,
I need you to meet me in the old choir room, I need help. Please come as soon as you read this.
Xoxo,
Chloe<3'I glanced at my books, then at the note. School or best friend? Was I willing to get an absence for Chloe? Yes, yes I was.
I slammed my locker closed and locked it before heading to the old choir room in the FAA and Cafeteria building. Outside the quad was filled with teens, and Colt was sitting at Chloe and I's table. I avoided him and kept going.
When I I opened the door to the choir room, sobbing could be heard from within the room.
"Chloe?" I called. "Is that you?"
"Y-yeah," she whispered, I ran to her. She looked so small and sad. I sat down beside her and pulled her into my lap as she cried.
When she calmed down enough, I asked her, "What happened?"
"M-my mum," she cried. "She left my dad and I."
