In the entrance hall, Theresa leaned against the door leading to the guards' office. Her hand still resting on the handle, her head dropped back with a thud. She drew a deep breath, and her face broke into a wide smile. The guard on duty to watch the footage of the security cameras outside, was evenly snoring behind her. It had taken a little convincing, but then he had drunken whatever she had offered him, however she had offered it to him.
Running her fingers down on herself, she ignited skin only covered by silk. She straightened her dress. From the mirror on the opposite wall watched her a glowing woman. No one stood a chance against that woman. Theresa winked at her as she crossed the hall, her stilettos clicking, ready to slay the dragon in the mosaic. The woman in the mirror grinned back at her.
When Theresa strained her neck to look around the corner, she could see the door to the room that they had offered to David, wide open. That could only mean that her darling husband was at it. He was in this moment doing what she had ask of him. For her. Such a good man. The heat rose in her as she pictured his hand seizing what was his and hers. It exploded into a firework at the thought of the sacrifice that had been laid to her feet.
"Who's there? What's going on?" A muffled whisper echoed through the hall.
Had it come from the bedchamber? Had David woken at Boris' steps? Or was the guard alert once more with only lingering remnants of the pleasant dream, he must think he had had, hanging from him? They couldn't be caught with the deed only half done. Nothing would have been gained. All would be ruined. Theresa grabbed a thick hank of her hair and pulled hard. She searched every corner, but couldn't find anything amiss.
"Where are you witches?" she mumbled. "Tell me, what went wrong?"
Nigel peeled himself away from the servants' staircase that, contrary to the grand staircase, was tugged away from sight. He grinned down the corridor that led to the open door. "We are here. All is well."
While they both watched on from their positions on either side of the hall, the shadows beyond David's door shifted and darkened, then reshaped into the distinct outlines of Boris's back as he looked one last time at what he had done. Theresa rose herself some more. Her chin went up. She shooed, ordered Nigel back out of sight. "Hide." Then she stepped fully into the corridor, the light of the entrance hall flooding around her and setting her hair on fire. "Husband."
Boris momentarily jumped, but – becoming aware of her – he hurried over. His eyes scanned the entrance hall, rested shortly on the closed door of the surveillance room, and searched what else he could see of the house from his position. After he was sure he couldn't see anyone, he seized Theresa's elbow and pulled her further into the light of the hall. There, he flashed her a smile, though the bravado was still a bit wobbly at the corners. "I have done the deed," he jubilated, then hesitated. "Did you hear the voices?"
"When?"
"Just now. Out here." Boris gave the room another once over, ready to bounce at whoever he might find while shielding Theresa.
