Flo detected the change of light through his closed lids. He forced them open. Aimed their approach, though his sight was still blurry. Planned for the steep rise right after. There wouldn't be much space to haul them up. He picked up speed already, pushed more force into his wings.
It wasn't more than an odd bend of shade caught with the corner of his eyes that told him that something wasn't as it should be. It would have been too late anyway. They were too fast to sidestep in the last second. He was too focused on climbing to turn. So, they flew right in it.
It turned out to be a net, spanning the width of the gate. When they hit it, it gave a little way. Enough so that Matis and Flo could catch a glimpse of the other side before they were pulled back into Nott's realm. Pulled, not catapulted because the net was sticky. Upon impact, it forced Flo to turn back into his human shape. And then they sank – with the net to the ground as well as into unconsciousness. Matis didn't even have a chance to try and use his hidden blades on the structure. Whatever sticky balm the net was covered in, it sucked the fight right out of both.
"Kill them!" The order was the last thing Flo and Matis heard through the fog before they were completely pulled under.
