"I know, I know. Let's just go already."
When we finally got to the school we automatically regretted going. Obviously, it was school after all. However, Jessica was there.
"Wonderful. I get to deal with you today." She turned to me directly. "I was hoping I wasn't going to have to again."
"Back off Jessica." Andrew stood directly in front of her. "It's not like we wanted to deal with you either."
"Why are you here anyways?" I asked.
"Cheerleading camp. It's sign ups today." She glanced at her phone. The four of us were standing in an abandoned hallway in the middle of the building. A broken water fountain was trickling loudly. Jessica put her phone in her pocket. "Anyways. Hey Justin."
Out of nowhere Jessica grabbed Justin's wrist and pinned him up against a set of lockers. Her hands rested in between the sides of his head and she grinned evilly.
"So. What do you say we, get dinner or something huh?" Her voice stung in my ears and I cringed as she leaned her face closer up to his.
Justin turned his head and breathed in deeply before calmly stating, "not interested. Sorry." That didn't seem to work though.
Jessica used her hand to trace the side of Justin's face and I could feel him cringing. His muscles tensed up and his breathing got slightly heavier. Andrew and I glanced at each other. Should we interfere?
"Oh come on. You don't want to disappoint me." She tried to put on a look of innocence but the thick layer of beauty products on her face prevented that from happening.
"Sorry. I'm not interested." Justin said it more carefully this time. Enunciating each word carefully to get it through her thick blonde head. Justin carefully ducked under her arm and walked over to the safety of Andrew and I.
"Unfortunate," was all she said. "I was hoping we could... get to know each other better." She reached for Justin's hand again but I couldn't control myself anymore.
"Stay away from him." I felt my courage rising. I stepped in front of Justin and approached her. "Can't you see he's not interested! Or are you too blonde to tell!"
Before I could even react Jessica reached up and struck me across the face with such force that it knocked me to the ground. My face rung out with pain but it quickly subsided. Andrew helped me up and I saw that Jessica had walked away. For her own good probably, or something worse could have happened.
"EW. That's all I have to say." Andrew had such a look of disgust on his face that was identical to when he had to change his sister's diaper a couple of years ago.
"Me too." Justin sighed and looked like he regretted something. "Let's go take our tests."
We all nodded, but a look of panic came across Andrew's and I's faces, and we both turned to Justin for help.
"Yeah I got you. Let's go."
We walked towards Justin's locker and equipped ourselves with the pencils and calculators that we had so carelessly forgotten and then sat through four hours of finals. Finals that rattled our brains and plucked at the hardest thoughts of our minds that we had completely ignored for the past couple of days.
I noticed that Justin downed about ten water bottles before going to the bathroom, and there were times when Andrew would fidget with his pencil so much that it seemed to change completely. I was jealous of how obvious their powers were to them. All I seemed to do was remember what was on the test. (Thankfully.)
After the make up tests we were all mentally exhausted and starving. Being the unprepared high school students that we were we did not bring any food. However we did have our legs, so we walked. We walked to the nearest fast food place and loaded up on junk.
We got hamburgers and fries and shakes and sat down in a booth in a corner, out of sight.
"So, just wondering," I tried to say between bitefuls of burger, "what are your guys's thoughts on like, everything that happened?"
"Well," Justin glared at Andrew as he stole some of his fries. "I'm just confused as to what we're going to do about it all. Are they gonna send us to some weird school or summer camp? Are we gonna get private lessons or something?"
"I dunno." Andrew shrugged. "I just care about eating food right now. I've been getting a lot hungrier lately and I don't know why. Wait, that's not true. It probably has something to do with me being a shapeshifter or something."
"Well at least you guys know what you are..." I said quietly. However they still heard me.
"Hey! We'll figure it out." Justin set down his quarter pounder and looked at me directly. "Why do you think the guy back in that place targeted you specifically? He could have just as easily asked one of us. And you were the one that got us out of that place in the first place."
Andrew stopped shoving fries in his face for a minute. "Not to mention you completely survived being painfully kicked in the ribs and should have died. But you didn't."
"You're special Ali. Don't doubt it for a minute."
"Thanks guys. I appreciate it."
"No problem." Justin went back to sipping on his strawberry shake.
"Just because I'm a shapeshifter or something and Justin's practically a water bender does not make you any less awesome." I couldn't help but smile at Andrew's cartoon reference.
"You shouldn't be that casual throwing those terms around," said a deep, familiar voice.
"AAAHH!!!" In a matter of instinct I grabbed my oreo shake and threw it directly at who I later realized was Jarvin.
He ended up a sticky mess with ice cream dripping down the front of his suit. He casually grabbed a handful of napkins and wiped off what he could.
"Sorry!" I shouted.
"Seriously though, learn some better reflexes. It's fine," he quickly added.
"Why are you here?" Justin asked accusingly.
"That's a different explanation, and not the one that I'm here for." He paused for a minute and glanced around the restaurant. "Can we go somewhere more private?"
