Chapter Thirteen - Another Night

Night came swiftly, and after a day of walking the tracks, killing walkers, and taking very few rest stops, the sun was finally gone. Nobody spoke and no one had since around noon. Everyone was exhausted and aggravated due to the sun not wanting to hide behind a single cloud all day. I was fairly sure Carol would to pass out, even if she was trying to pull a brave face for everyone.

I could no longer feel my feet, the pressure from walking on them all day on the uneven tracks built up quickly. Every few seconds I'd sling my feet out in front of me trying to get some circulation flowing through them and to force myself to continue to take step after step. How I missed my cabin.

The sun had just set when we caught sight of another building, a watchtower maybe I couldn't be sure. Some people wanted to keep moving. However, considering we had walked for hours and we'd be traveling in the dark, and not to mention the state Carol looked to be in, that was not going to happen. Glenn wanted to keep going, wanting to have Maggie in a safer place or something like that but she calmed him down saying she could take care of herself and we all needed the rest.

There were two walkers in the building when we neared it, one falling out of the window and almost hitting Eugene. As you could imagine, Abraham had a fit and demanded he wear Glenn's armour. Either way we cleared the area, filtered into the building and figured out a watch system. We all settled into the open second floor of the structure and dropped our bags.

Apparently Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita were to leave in the morning and head to Washington for a reason I wasn't allowed to know. Headed toward Terminus, Maggie, Glenn, Tara, Sasha, and Bob were to tag along with us then leave a bit later for another route there, at least that was what I was able to pick up from conversation. Regardless, all I could think about was my burning feet and heavy eyelids from a second day of walking.

Laying my blanket down on the cold floor I watched as Carl trudged toward me from the corner of my eye. I forced a smile up at him, eyes lingering on his lips as he gave me a tired smirk back. He took a blanket out of his small bag and laid it out next to mine, laying down on it almost immediately with a grunt.

"Tired?" I asked while positioning my backpack down as a pillow again before resting myself.

"Exhausted, actually." He mustered up enough energy to reach over and tug his boots off, tossing them away carelessly not worrying about where they landed.

Noah kicked one of Carl's shoes back over to him while he walked past, pointing to the empty space near my feet, eyebrows raised.

"Go ahead." I nodded eagerly with a smile, happy that he wasn't isolating himself again like he had earlier that day.

What he went through at Grady was hard enough on him. Thinking about his family, not knowing if they were still there or what state they were in on top of that was like carrying a ton of bricks.

Carl coughed beside me while Noah drops his small backpack and got comfortable for the night. I glanced over at Carl to see him lying face up with his arm thrown over his eyes. I laid down on my side curling up next to him with my hands under my head. He dropped his head over to look at me. The chill air was comfortable around us, cooling us off from the heat earlier today. I let out a heavy sigh and finally allowed my body to relax.
