I run across a field of soft green grass, my smile brighter than the sun. My mother on the foot of our steps, arms opened wide. She bent down on one knee so my little self could wrap my short arms around her neck. I could see her clearly, I saw her eyes every time I looked in the mirror. And her hair every time I put up mine. I watched myself jump into her arms and she happily picks me up and swings me around. She then puts me down and I let go.
"Did you enjoy your day with your father?" Her kind voice asks. I, in my little squeaky voice, answered, "Yes Mum! We met a nice man who gave us dark sheep and me a bow." The little girl pulled out a pretty red ribbon. My mother laughed, "That's not a bow yet dearest one." She took the ribbon and turned me around. She wrapped the ribbon around my ponytail and neatly put it into a bow.
"Now it is."
"Looks good on you Y/n," my father said walking up to me. He picked me up and put his arm around my mother, then walked us in the house.
Not a few seconds later I was in our sheep pen, the lighting shifting to dusk to dawn faster then I could blink. My father and I walk in the herd with a shepherd's crooks. My hair was longer, but my bow still intact.
"Now Y/n you have to be soft to the sheep, they'll be much gentler to you." He explained to me as he knelt down to pet one. I nodded and stepped outside of the herd. I held out my crook to the sheep. I made a clicking sound with my mouth and nudged them forward by tapping a few with my hand a crook. They lazily began to move to our barn. I looked up and smiled at my Father that gestured for me to keep going.
"Great job sweaty!!!" My mother yelled from the fence.
The sheep jolted awake and spooked. They all scattered in all different directions tumbling over me in the process. I covered my face with my arms as I got trampled. Once they all had run over me I sat up a bit in shock.
My father came over to me to help me up. "You ok?" He asked with a chuckle. I nodded and looked over to my mother who had her hand over her mouth.
"Did I do that?" Asking she came into the pasture.
"Well, It was bound to happen, better to learn early." He laughed as she came over.
I closed my eyes for a moment and opened them back up to see the market place. I remembered this place, I never liked going here. The road lined with merchants in their tents. I put my hand on my head and felt that I had added a braid by now. I was carrying a bag on my back filled with tools and some special sheep feed.
As I approached a place I dreaded I attempted to speed walk, but my legs suddenly felt like they were skin and bones. I narrowed my brows as I was forced to go through this again. I looked to some other kids my age on the side of the road. They were training with swords and axes. They fought one another.
As I watched them I suddenly caught one of their eyes. He stopped and put down his ax. His friends stopped as well and looked to me.
"Hey Shepard," He said as I stopped.
He grabbed his friend's sword and tossed it to me. It fell on the ground in front of me, stirring a little bit of dust. "Show me what you got." He readied his ax and waited for me.
I readjusted the pack on my pack and kept walking. He lowed his weapon and glanced back to his friends, "Like I thought," He whipped his head around to me, "Nothing."
"There's a quota Shepard! You better meet it before Chief ships you off!" He shouted as I walked away. I wanted this to end so I through my pack down, hoping it'd do something.
