The streets of sector 45 were empty, we had agreed for the time being to set a curfew so that it would be easy to see anyone trying to get into the sector. We couldn't be too careful especially since I only took over the re-establishment a month ago; everyone is still on edge – expecting something to happen. The world doesn't know much about us, or how we came to power and I understand that Anderson must have had some kind of friends and leaders in other countries.
Kenji's sharp features are highlighted underneath the moon as we amble on alongside each other. He has been talking to me for about 10 minutes straight about some kind of comic superhero dude, and I had zoned out, lost in thought.
'Are you even listening to me?' Kenji suddenly halts and gives me a frustrated look.
I am caught out and stutter back 'y-yeah, Parker got bitten by a spider and then he errr climbed a wall and errr- look no, okay, I kind of zoned out, I'm sorry Kenji I've just got a lot to think about and I'm tired, it's like 3 am.' I gave him an apologetic look and look back at the ground.
He nods silently and then slings his arm on my shoulder and pulls me playfully against his side, 'Juliette you can talk to me about anything you know, come on I can be like your personal Agony Aunt!' He laughs and then in a croaky voice says 'what's troubling you my sweet dearest?'
I laugh too, and decide to go along with the game anyway, 'well, I don't know... It's just I've been really on edge lately, and then after I thought I saw that figure on the way here-'Wait! I gasped and bit my lip in annoyance; I wasn't supposed to tell him today.
'Wait hold up J, what figure?' he had stopped walking now and was dead serious.
'I, well it was just on the way here, and...'
'Okay, what happened?' Kenji demanded
I looked at him wearily 'Really, it wasn't that big of a deal, I just had a little scare'
'J you are worrying me now, just spill'
'Okay, okay, well I was on my way here, and I had just accidently turned on the lights, but just before I turned them off again I thought I saw this figure at the end of the hall.'
'What? He must have been a bit shocked.
'But it was probably nothing because when I turned them on again nobody was there, I probably just imaged it.'
Kenji had now turned around and was heading back the way we came 'was it someone from the sector?'
I shrugged 'I don't think so; but I think the guy was wearing a hood so I can't be sure'
'So you know it's a guy?' Kenji questioned
'No, not really, I don't know my brain goes all fuzzy when I try to remember what it looks like'
'Juliette, you should have told me sooner, even if this figure or whatever was just your imagination or someone from the sector, we have to be certain.' I nodded along with him and felt bad for not telling him sooner.
'Shall we go back?' I suggested guiltily
'Yeah I guess so, I'm glad you told me now okay, ill alert all the security teams and have them on alert and ask around if anyone else saw anything.' I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but it's good to be sure.'
'Yeah' I mumbled 'hey so much for finding one of those boxes of books, ey' and I nudged his shoulder 'we could go again sometime this week though right?'
Kenji smiled 'Yeah that would be cool, but as long as you let me torture you with batman'
I laughed and agreed to the terms, I felt better now that I had told Kenji but I was disappointed in myself for not being the one to alert the security and realising that it could be more serious than I thought.
