"Have you heard of the Original Witch?"

I'm startled from my comfortable position as Niklaus asks the question. I turn to sit on the crisp white motel bed, nodding. "That's basic history for the supernatural world, no less Elementals."

He nods back, his ruffled, dark blonde curls darting into his face as he lowers his head.

Sensing his defeat, I continue, "You can tell me about her, if you'd like."

He stood from his chair and walked over, planting himself down so our knees were touching. His ocean eyes pierced into mine and my heart quivered.

"I'd prefer to show you."

"Please, Ayana!" Mikael pleaded with the powerful sorceress. "I implore you! You must call upon the spirits before the next full moon."

Ayana was defiant, "I will not! It is a crime against nature. Orthanach O'Luain would have this whole village shamed for such blasphemy."

Esther stood next to her husband as they tried to persuade her into helping them. "Ayana, we have already lost too much. We cannot lose any more... If the spirits can help us find a way to protect our children, Orthanach should not have much worries for it."

Rebekah cut herself off, as she caught Elena's attention. "I'm thirsty. Do you want a drink?"

She goes down to the library with Elena following behind her.

Elena asked first, "So, vampirism was a form of protection?"

"What else would it be?"

Elena looked at her in obvious distaste, "A curse?"

The female original answered honestly, "My parents only saw a way of keeping their children alive."

Elena understood that but she had further inquiries, "Yeah, but why stay, if they were so afraid of the werewolves? Why not...leave? Since it seems obvious those witches in your story were against it."

Rebekah answered, "Orthanach was not a witch. He held power that was much more organic, and he sought balance to be kept for nature's sake as he was in tune with it. He was revered by the community— especially the witches. The reason for my parents not up and leaving with us? Pride..." The blonde sighed, "My father didn't want to run anymore. He wanted to fight and be superior to the wolves. Where they could bite, we had to bite harder. Where they had speed, we had to be faster. Agility, strength, senses..."

Rebekah flashbacks to the 900s; Mikael, Esther and Ayana continue talking in their home.

"Everything could be heightened. Our family could live forever..."

Ayana shook her head at the prospect of what Mikael was saying, "At what cost? This magic you speak of breeds consequence. This is the makings of a plague, Esther. Orthanach would have the spirits turn on you."

Esther pleaded yet again, "Please, Ayana."

Ayana was firm in her beliefs, "I will have no part in it."

Ayana leaves the home and Mikael closes the door to speak to Esther.

Mikael was stern, "If she will not protect our family...then it is in your hands alone, my love."

The doppelgänger had questions as the backstory was finished.

"In her hands? How could she do anything?"
