Another day, another rude awakening.
Today, it wasn't the sound of Parker Wilson yelling a curse word. Today it was my twin sister whacking my head with a pillow.
I was so surprised that I fell off of my bed with a little shriek. A hand stuck out and helped me back onto my feet. I glared at my twin sister who smiled at me with excitement.
"It's my first day at Decker High today!" Brooklyn squeals. Yes, actual squealage.
I smiled at her weakly. "Yay."
Brooklyn frowns. "You don't seem too excited."
"Brooklyn, I'm not popular at school. I've got three friends and everyone else hates me," I sigh. "I'm not someone you want to be seen with."
"That's not something I'm worried about, Hattie. Trust me."
I give her a smile and she smiles back before skipping across the hall to her room. I can hear her rifling through her closet looking for an outfit in her chic wardrobe. I looked back to my plain wardrobe and winced. I was the lesser Hood twin.
After I had gotten ready and dressed, I went downstairs to the kitchen table. I stopped in my tracks when I saw Brooklyn. Of course, Brooklyn looked like she stepped out of a fashion magazine in her dress, shoes, accessories, and hair. Not to mention her makeup! I'm pretty sure I saw that dress in a designer magazine.
I look down self consciously at my black skinny jeans and olive green top. When Brooklyn flipped her blonde curls, I touched my two boxer braids. I saw a flash of her designer shoes and looked down at my black Chuck Taylors.
To say I felt under dressed is an understatement.
As I chewed on my banana, Brooklyn broke the silence and spoke to our dad. "So, Dad, are you taking Hattie and I to school today?"
My dad looked up from his coffee mug. "I am?" To me, he said, "Hattie, I thought Brooklyn was going with you and your friends today."
Speaking of my friends, the familiar sound a Mustang's horn honking sounded. "Yeah, sure. Come on Brooklyn, our ride is here." I pressed a quick kiss to my dad's cheek. "Bye, Dad."
I rush out of the house before Brooklyn. I hear the heels on Brooklyn's shoes clicking behind me. When she catches up, she stops me. "You still kiss Dad goodbye? Isn't that, like, a elementary school thing."
I couldn't help it. I rolled my eyes and pulled away from her. I was about to open the passenger seat to Archer's Mustang, my usual spot, when I felt Brooklyn's hand on my arm again.
"Can I sit here? I really want to get close to Archer," Brooklyn pleads.
I resist the urge to roll my eyes again and nod. "Sure. Why not," I force a smile. I back away and slide into the backseat.
Archer cocks an eyebrow at me as I buckle up and Brooklyn slides in the front. "Hattan, how come you aren't in the front?"
Will nods. "Not that I hate you sitting back her, but I agree with Archer. Your spot is up there."
"Um, I just thought Brooklyn might feel uncomfortable if she sat next to two people she didn't know," I answered. My sister flashed me a grateful look.
As Parker, Will and I chattered away, I noticed that Brooklyn kept placing her hand on Archer's arm. She even asked him if he worked out a lot! I know it's a flirty question for her, but like seriously?
Muscles don't come from fast food.
Will leaned over Parker and whispered into my ear, "I think your sister is into Archer."
Parker overhears and snorts. "No shit she is, Griffin! If she wasn't into Archer than she wouldn't be feeling up his arms!"
The three of us eyed Brooklyn and Archer. Archer was sitting very stiffly and actually driving at a legal pace. I repeat, a legal pace. I've know Archer for a month and a half now, but I know well enough that Archer speeds. He says it gives him an adrenaline rush.
An adrenaline rush that will probably lead to his death.
"She's attracted to him," I said carefully.
Parker scoffs. "Understatement." To that, Will shoots him a sharp look.
I glance at Brooklyn and Archer again. "I think they'd be cute together."
Will murmurs to us, "Archer isn't exactly into blondes."
"There's a first time for everything," I said. Will looked unconvinced and turned his attention to the window.
I frowned and looked down at my lap. Brooklyn had only just gotten to my town of Monterey and things were already changing. She was flirting with one of my only friends and I think she just caused what was possibly a mini disagreement/argument with Will.
"Hey," Parker whispered. He reached out and lifted my chin up. I looked him in the eyes and felt little butterflies in my stomach. "It's gonna be fine, Hattan. Trust me. Everything's going to work out."
"Okay."
Parker smiled and squeezed my knee before looking away. My eyes lingered on his face before I quickly looked down. If he wasn't so handsome I wouldn't be feeling the butterflies. Or so I was trying to convince myself. I could feel something inside me that I wasn't used to.
Closeness? Affection? Attraction? Whatever it was, I didn't like it. It was scary.
I was absolutely certain that it involved Parker Wilson.

omg i have updated four times today. go mikaila.
DON'T READ THE REST OF THIS AUTHOR'S NOTE BC THERE'S SPOILERS FROM THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THIS STORY (this is a rewritten chapter)
i'm actually kind of happy with how this chapter turned out. because when i originally wrote brooklyn as a antagonist, it just happened so suddenly. like one second she's a sweetheart princess then BAM she's a demon. this definitely has some foreshadowing into brooklyn's antagonism.
i hope you all enjoyed the chapter !
