"Do you forgive me?"
"Of course." He nods his head.
"Then sure...But, why'd you do it James? Why didn't you just...break up with me and leave all of this out?"
James looks at me with sad eyes, and his gaze flickers fearfully at Sam standing behind me protectively.
"I-I...I thought it would be payback...and maybe some publicity for my record deals! But...I was wrong. As soon as I sent them the video, I felt awful. I swear I'll make it right, I promise." He holds up his hands. Genuinely pleased with the answer, I nod and give James a small parting smile. Sam's eyes are not as fiery as before, so I take it as a good time to leave.
But James just had to ruin it. Again.
"And...Hey, Sam?"
Sam hesitates to turn around. I can see it in his face how he's resisting the urge to knock James out. But they face each other again, almost like a showdown. I almost fear the chaos that's probable to come.
"Yes?" Sam stands as still as a rock.
"Have fun knocking up another one of your mistakes." James crosses his arms, one last attempt at a bitter last word. My eyes widen at his words, and I could see Sam's eyes light ablaze once more and his muscles tense. I try to hold him back, but he lunges towards James, and grabs his collar.
"Didn't I tell you there'd be HELL to pay if you say one more word of them?! You listen to me, you prick, my daughter and Y/N Y/L/N are the best things to ever happen to me. If you so much as THINK negatively about them again, I will make your life...very difficult." Sam snaps, his words like fire.
James shakes under him, giving the most cowardly cover up of his insecurities I've ever seen.
"Do you understand me?!" He spits.
"Y-Yes. Yes." James' voice cracks. I sigh in relief when Sam lets go of his collar. James avoids all eyes contact as Sam gently holds my free hand from my bags and leads me away.
"Jesus Christ, I thought you were going to explode." We scurry away as Sam cools off. Taking one last glance behind me, I see James scoop up his laptop and run out of the hotel while typing on his phone.
"I thought you were, too." He agrees, making me exhale all my worries. "That son of a-"
"Sam, relax. It's all over now." I hit the elevator button, drawing all of my attention to the storm brewing in his eyes.
"I know...I know, but it's not really over. The media is going to go crazy, and this could affect so much about my parental rights and custody with Claire once we get back." He sighs, running a hand through his hair as we enter the elevator. I steam with anger at James.
Maybe I should've just punched him.
"I told you I wished things were different...but I didn't mean this." My stomach churns with guilt, what a surprise. I turn to Sam who's already looking deep into my eyes.
"I know, Y/N. Trust me, I know what it's like to make mistakes. But we made it through the storm. We just have to make it through the rain, now." Sam gives me a small smile, his dimples erasing all the fear in my mind.
"We will make it through everything, I promise. I know James is scared out of his wits now, and knowing he's a real coward, he's going to take it all back," We chuckle together, "I will fight with every fiber in my being that you will get Claire once we get back to California. And...I promise I'll be there with you. Every second of the way."
