It all happened so fast. One moment, they were fighting side by side, and the next, he was gone. Aiden, Brynne's best friend, was gone. And she couldn't do anything about it. She screamed and kicked and cried, but nothing was going to bring him back. The others grieved, but none as deeply as her. She wanted Aiden back.
Eventually, she had enough. Against the wishes of the Council and her own sisters, she set out to find him. And find him, she did. But it wasn't him, not any longer. His eyes, once bright and lively, were now dull and flat. His movements were monotonous, and seemed to be controlled by puppet strings. This wasn't the Aiden she knew. Brynne dropped to her knees, not struggling even when her best friend knocked her out.
She awoke hours later in a cell, with Aiden standing guard. She rose to her feet and reached out to him. "Aiden..." Her voice caught, sounding weak even to her. He whipped around and faced her. There was no light, no love, no recognition in his eyes. He didn't know who she was. "D-Do you not remember me? I'm your best friend! Look!" She held out her arm, showing him the bracelets that she'd won with him by her side. Something changed in him for a moment so brief, she thought she must have imagined it. The moment was over too soon, and he turned away. "I don't know you. And I never have." His voice broke her heart, so devoid of emotion. She sat down, and wept.
