Jacin couldn't believe this was happening. This wasn't how the story was supposed to go! But here they were. Winter was on her deathbed, and he couldn't do anything about it. This wasn't right. Couldn't it have been Levana or Aimery or Sybil? Who would do that to Winter, his Winter? Levana, he concluded, but that didn't matter. Not anymore.
Winter was humming. This was the last 30 minutes of her life, and she was still trying to be positive. Stars, he loved that woman. And she was going to be taken from him. When he finally figured out what song it was, he was shocked. It was the song she used to sing to him whenever he was sad. Things took a turn for the worse.
She started coughing. Violently. The doctors rushed in to deliver the painkillers so that her death would be painless. Tears welled in Jacin's eyes. He wrapped her in a hug, and started singing.
"You are my sunshine..." Cough.
"My only sunshine." The monitor beeped.
"You make me happy when skies are grey." Crying.
"You'll never know, dear, how much I love you." She went limp.
"Please don't... take... my sunshine away."
