Y/N woke up the next morning to what sounded like an argument.
She hurried out of her room and stood at the top of the staircase to see her mother and Scott standing in the entryway. Both of them seemed angry.
"I understand. But this is also my day too," said Scott. "I believe I should also have a say in things."
"Yes, but I'd rather not have her there," Y/N's mother said. "I know she's your family but she has issues with drinking. You told me yourself. I'm sorry but I don't think she should be at our wedding where everyone else will be having champagne."
Scott sighed. "I just— I have to go to work," he said as he ripped his coat off the rack. "We'll discuss this later, alright? I love you."
"I love you too," Y/N's mother replied quietly.
And with that, Scott left.
Y/N descended the stairs and touched her mother's shoulder.
"Good morning, Y/N/N," she said with a brief smile.
"Morning... Is everything okay?" Y/N asked, tilting her head.
"Yeah. Don't worry about it," her mother said as she gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Oh, I almost forgot. I have to work but I need cookies to bring to Susan's Christmas party. So, I was hoping you could bake them. You can invite Rodrick over if you'd like. To help you. Just please, don't let him operate the oven."
Y/N chuckled softly. "I won't. Bye, Mom."
Her mother kissed her cheek before slipping on her jacket and stepping outside. "Bye. Love you."
"Love you too," Y/N said as her mother shut the door.
She pulled out her phone and texted Rodrick.
Y/N: Good morning :)
doofus<33: good morning <3
Y/N: I have a question
doofus<33: i'm hoping i have an answer
Y/N: Mom's gone to work and she needs me to bake cookies for your mom's Christmas party so I wanted to know if you'd come over and help me bake them
doofus<33: yeah ofc i will
Y/N: Thank you :)
doofus<33: anything for you :))
doofus<33: so when do i need to be there
Y/N: You can come over whenever. It won't take too long to bake them
doofus<33: ok i'll be over right away
Y/N: Okay. See you soon :)
doofus<33: :))
Y/N laid her phone on the couch and went up to her room to get ready for the day.
When she was finished getting ready, she skipped her way downstairs.
The moment she reached the bottom step, she heard a knock.
Y/N quickly opened the front door and beamed when she saw Rodrick standing in the doorway.
"Good morning," he said with a bright smile.
"Good morning," Y/N replied as she stepped aside, letting Rodrick in.
He kicked off his Converse which were soaked from the snow and turned to Y/N. "What cookies are we baking?" he asked.
"Gingerbread and..." Y/N racked her brain as she tried to remember what cookies her mother had said she wanted to bake. "I have no idea. Let's go look."
She grabbed Rodrick's hand and pulled him into the kitchen.
She pushed him against the counter before hurriedly walking over to the fridge. Rodrick watched as she grabbed a bunch of ingredients from the fridge and placed them on the countertop beside him.
"I remember now. We're making gingerbread and sugar cookies," Y/N said as she eyed all of the ingredients. "Which one should we make first?"
"Gingerbread," Rodrick replied with a nod.
Y/N smiled and preheated the oven before walking over to the pantry and pulling out her mother's pink apron which said 'Kiss the Cook'.
Rodrick gave Y/N a puzzled look as she ambled over to him with a grin on her face. "Y/N?"
She put the apron over his neck before reaching behind him to tie it.
"What are you doing?" he asked. "I— I didn't agree to this."
"Yes you did," said Y/N.
"When?" Rodrick asked as she stepped back to look at him.
"When you accepted my invitation for you to come over," Y/N told him as she opened her mother's recipe book. She flipped to the page dedicated to Christmas baking and laid it on the countertop.
As she separated all the ingredients into piles, Rodrick stretched his arms behind his back and tried to untie the apron.
Y/N took his hands and placed them onto the counter. He sighed. "Y/N, do I have to wear this?" he asked.
"Yes," she replied as she bent down to grab a bowl from one of the cupboards. As she was crouched down on the floor, Rodrick rested his hand on the edge of the counter just in case she accidentally hit her head.
She stood up and placed the bowl onto the countertop. She then began mixing the ingredients into the bowl accordingly while glancing at the recipe book every so often.
Rodrick watched with a sour look on his face. He folded his arms over his chest and Y/N smiled at him. "This isn't funny," he grumbled.
"Yes, it is," she replied. "Now, would you like to help?"
"Not with this on," Rodrick said as he tugged on the apron. Y/N ruffled his hair before continuing to add ingredients to the bowl.
Once everything was ready, she sprinkled flour onto the counter and placed the dough on top. She used a rolling pin to flatten out the dough before pulling out gingerbread men-shaped cookie cutters. She handed one to Rodrick who happily took it to cut into the cookie dough.
Y/N helped him place the cookies onto the tray before she placed them into the oven.
As she waited for the gingerbread cookies to bake, she began to make the sugar cookies. Rodrick decided to shove his bitter behaviour aside and actually help Y/N because he started to feel bad that she was doing all the work.
Once the sugar cookie dough was done and they cut out some cookies, they placed the first batch on another tray and Y/N placed it into the oven beside the tray of gingerbread which were close to done.
Y/N leaned against the counter and Rodrick stepped in front of her. She looked up at him and glanced at the apron he wore. She let out a quiet chuckle.
"What?" he asked. He followed her gaze to the apron and frowned. "I'm taking it off." He reached for the strings behind his back but Y/N took his hands and placed them by his sides.
She then placed her finger in the leftover flour that was left on the counter and dabbed Rodrick's nose with it.
He shook his head and wiped the powder off his nose. Y/N smiled before kissing his cheek.
As she was about to open the oven door to check on the cookies, Lee began whining from behind them.
"What's wrong?" Y/N asked as she walked over to Lee who twirled around. She peered over her shoulder at Rodrick. "I'm going to let her out. Keep an eye on the cookies please."
He nodded and opened the oven. He took out the gingerbread cookies which were done baking and waited for the sugar cookies to be done.
Y/N picked up Lee and brought her outside so she could use the bathroom. But as Y/N waited on the front porch for Lee, she realized her dog was standing still in the snow.
"Go on," said Y/N as she waved her hand. Lee tilted her head but didn't move. "Lee, go on."
The little dog kept giving Y/N a confused look before she waddled up the steps of the front porch. She snuggled up to Y/N to keep warm.
"Did you not have to go?" Y/N asked as if her dog could understand her. Lee looked up at her and whined. "Alright, alright. We'll go inside." She opened the door and stepped inside, Lee hot on her trail.
When Y/N kicked off her shoes, a strange smell hit her nose. It came from the kitchen. She sniffed the air and frowned. It smelt as though something was burning.
She hurriedly made her way into the kitchen to see a panicked Rodrick standing by the oven, his apron off and a tray of burnt sugar cookies on the countertop next to him.
"So, what happened?" Y/N asked as she walked over to Rodrick who spun around to face her.
He chuckled nervously and scratched the back of his neck. "While you were outside, I tried to take the apron off but I got distracted and forgot that I had to keep an eye on the cookies."
Y/N nodded slowly and looked at the burnt sugar cookies.
"Sorry," he mumbled. "For not listening."
She kissed his cheek. "That's okay. At least we have another batch," she told him.
He nodded slowly and helped her roll out the other batch of dough. Then they placed the cookies onto a new tray and placed it into the oven.
Y/N stared at the burnt cookies and let out a quiet laugh.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing," she replied with a shrug. "Just my mom told me not to let you operate the oven before she left." She looked at Rodrick with a grin.
He chuckled softly. "Yeah... I'm not that trustworthy with ovens."
"Or microwaves," Y/N added. "Remember that time you burnt popcorn?"
He nodded with a smile. "Okay, but that was different than this," he said. "I had no clue how long I was supposed to leave the popcorn in for. But what happened just then, that was because you forced me to wear that apron."
Y/N shook her head and ruffled Rodrick's hair.
She then started to clean up the mess that was left on the counter. Rodrick, meanwhile, kept an eye on the cookies through the little window in the oven.
When the batch was done, they began to decorate the cookies.
As Y/N did some generic gingerbread faces on her set of cookies, Rodrick decorated his set of cookies based on people he liked.
"Who are they?" Y/N asked as she pointed at Rodrick's cookies.
"This one is Gerard Way, this one is Johnnie Guilbert, and these two—" he pointed to two gingerbread cookies whose hands were stuck together because their dough overlapped while they were baking in the oven "—are you and me."
Y/N smiled. "That reminds me of the cookie I made of you last year."
Rodrick mirrored her expression. "That's where I got the idea," he said. "At first I thought of making these two Gerard Way and Lyn-Z but I thought it made more sense if it were you and me."
Y/N's smile grew and she kissed Rodrick's cheek. His face coloured pink and he laughed bashfully. She kissed his cheek once more before glancing around at all of the cookies on the counter.
"It looks as though we've decorated all of them," she said. "I'll get my mom's cookie tin and we can put them away."
Y/N bent down in front of one of the cupboards and Rodrick kept his hand on the edge of the counter above her head.
When she stood up, with the Christmas cookie tin in her hands, Rodrick helped her put all of the cookies away.
Once they were finished, they went up into Y/N's room with Lee.
Rodrick plopped himself down on her bed and picked up the Build-A-Bear they made together. He tossed it into the air and caught it.
Y/N walked over to him and sat down on the edge of the bed. Lee waddled over to her and stood on her hind legs. Y/N smiled before she reached for her dog. She scooped Lee into her arms and placed her on the bed.
Lee crawled on top of Rodrick and curled up in a ball on his chest.
He placed the Build-A-Bear aside and brushed his hand along Lee's fur.
Y/N scratched behind Lee's ears which caused the little dog to make a noise of contentment.
Y/N smiled before she lid down on her stomach and pulled out her phone. She went into Netflix and turned on one of Rodrick's favourite movies.
He beamed and picked Lee up from his chest. He gently placed her beside him and Y/N and turned over on his stomach.
Rodrick pressed a kiss to Y/N's temple before he cuddled up next to her and Lee.
—————————Hours Later————————
Y/N and Rodrick had just finished watching their third film of the day.
Rodrick stretched with a yawn and turned to Y/N with a sleepy grin on his face. "Do you want to watch another one?" he asked.
Y/N smiled. "Yeah, sure. Do you have any in mind?"
"I think so," Rodrick mumbled. He held out his hand and Y/N passed him her phone.
As he started to scroll through all of the films on Netflix, the front door opened.
Y/N sat up when she heard her mother's voice. Her mother's very angry voice.
"I just think it would be better without her!" her mother shouted from downstairs.
"She's my little cousin! She should be at my wedding!" Scott yelled.
Y/N swung her legs over the side of her bed and tapped her foot nervously as she listened to them bicker.
Rodrick slowly sat up and looked at Y/N who was staring blankly at the floor. He scooted towards her and gently touched her arm. She quickly turned to him. "Are you okay?" he asked gently. She nodded. "Y/N, are you sure?" She paused before nodding again.
"She's an alcoholic, Scott!" Y/N's mother shouted. "Y/N and I have had our fair share of alcoholics in our life and I don't want one ruining our wedding."
Rodrick slid off the bed and carefully shut Y/N's door to muffle the loud argument downstairs.
Then he walked over to her and sat back down. He reached for her hand and caressed her knuckles with his thumb. "Y/N/N?" She looked up at him and he cupped the side of her face with his free hand. "Do you want to leave? We can leave out the window and go to my house. Or somewhere else."
"No, that's okay," she mumbled.
"Are you sure?" he asked, eyeing her with concern. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Y/N, if you want to—"
"I'm okay," Y/N interjected. "Really. I am."
They held each other's gaze until Rodrick nodded. He squeezed her hand reassuringly and kissed her forehead.
Y/N rested her head on Rodrick's shoulder and scooted closer to him. He slid his arm around her waist and held her close.
"Do you think they'll stop arguing?" Y/N asked.
"Oh yeah," said Rodrick with a nod. "They'll sort everything out. It'll be okay."
Y/N nodded and looked down at her leg which bounced up and down anxiously.
Rodrick followed her gaze to her shaky leg and he frowned slightly. He moved his hand from hers to her leg which he caressed with his thumb.
Y/N leaned into him more and closed her eyes. Rodrick kissed her temple while he rubbed his hand along her arm to soothe her.
Minutes later, Y/N dozed off beside him. He knew she had fallen asleep when she leaned all of her weight against him. He smiled softly and slowly lifted her head off his shoulder. Then he laid her on her back and pulled the blankets over her.
Rodrick lid down next to her and brushed his lips against Y/N's cheek before gently stroking her hair.
He spent the night there with her, feeling as though it would bring her comfort to have him next to her.
