"Maybe I loved it a little too much. All I cared about was if I won. But today is about us. Taylor and Brie you've shown up for all over and over again this year, and now I'm showing up for you guys. And Skye, I know we just met and you probably think we're all way too competitive..."
"Yeah this isn't even her being competitive. You should see her on the volleyball court." Briella pointed out, causing them to laugh.
"But our team wouldn't be where we are without you. When Conrad chose this team, he thought they had it in the bag. But we have proven them wrong. And whether we win or lose, we are worthy of that giant bag..."
"Oh you can be as inspirational as you want Belly. We're still going to kick your asses." Steven said.
"Shut up Steven." Taylor yelled to the boy causing them to laugh.
"All right, I don't know about you guys..." Belly said. "But I feel the need."
"The need for speed!" They all yelled.
"Let's fucking do this!" Briella yelled, getting into a go-kart. She winked at Conrad who was right next to her. Skye and Taylor decided to ride a two-seater while Belly and Briella rode a one-seater. The boys decided to ride all one-seaters.
3 vs 3.
"Drivers, start your engines!" Cam Cameron yelled, with the starting flag in his hand. "Go!"
The girl pressed on the pedal as she zoomed passed by everyone moving behind Belly. She drove right next to her and yelled. "You go ahead. I'll block Conrad."
She nodded as she sped up as the girl tried her best to drive in a zigzag line, throwing the boy off.
"Brie what are you doing?" Conrad yelled.
"Winning."
"Not a chance."
"Last lap!" Cam Cameron yelled.
On the last turn, the girl was an idiot to let the boy pass her in the inner lane. "Damnit no!" And in front of her eyes Conrad sped up and passed Belly to win the race. "Damnit!"
And that's how she found herself in the candy shop as she watched the boys happily pick out candy.
"You know, I think that's why our mom banned us from playing." Belly said, defeated.
"I could pay. I mean, I made a ton of money shorting bitcoin so..." Skye offered.
"You are one of the most interesting people I've ever met." Taylor chuckled.
"Thanks?"
"You don't have to pay Skye. My dad gave me his credit card for this trip so it's on him." Briella said.
"You sure?" Skye asked as the girl nodded, telling they it was ok.
"Yeah Brie's dad is crazy rich so... a few bucks for candy isn't the end of the world for him." Taylor said before looking at her two friends. "You guys ok?"
"I mean, is it weird for me to be having an existential crisis about this? Am I good enough for our volleyball team if I can't even win boardwalk games?"
"No, we need you on the team because you lost the boardwalk games." Taylor said. "I mean we have a great team, but that doesn't mean that we're going to win every game. We need somebody that's going to lead us win or lose."
"Or tie?" Skye added.
"We don't tie." Briella said.
"Yeah fuck ties."
The girl chuckled at Skye. "No Bells, you will always be a better captain than me. And you wanna know why? You encourage us. Even if we're down five points, one set, on the verge of losing, you still are clapping your hands and motivating us to not give up. That's why we need you on the team."
"Even if I suck?"
"You don't suck Bells." Briella corrected the girl. "You were just distracted."
"And besides if you suck, we have Brie to lean on. She is two-time CIF MVP." Taylor added. "What you did today is what a leader does. Coach would be insane to not give you your captaincy back this year."
"And if she gives it to me, which she has tried, I'm not gonna take it. Captain belongs to you Bells." Briella added.
"No Brie, you've worked hard too. You deserve it just as much as I do." Belly said to the girl causing her to shake her head.
"I got what I needed. I got my scholarships. Now it's time to get yours too."
"They're right you know. I mean a couple hours ago, the idea of participating, let alone competing in games was quite literally hell. Against all odds, I've kind of had a great day getting to know my cousins so you're good at this. You're a natural boss." Skye complimented the girl.
"Sorry to interrupt." Conrad clears his throat.
"Perfect timing as always." Briella said.
"Is it time?" Belly asked.
"It's time. The Tower of Terror awaits."
"I'm gonna get you a barf bag." Steven said, enjoying this a little too much.
As the girl stood there staring at the Tower of Terror, she felt scared for Belly. Granted she's gone on it already but still, doesn't make it less terrifying.
And what was cute was that Jeremiah went on with the girl. The girl smiled. After what happened with them last summer, they deserve to be happy, to be together too.
Just like how Conrad and Briella deserve to be happy and be together.
After a very long, but fun day at Boardwalk, the group finally drove home. They were grateful for times like these. Because even if they didn't know what the future holds for the Fisher house, they were all lucky to have each other.
The girl didn't want to think too much about it. She didn't want to think why Conrad decided to drive in her car. But she didn't mind. Also because she was too tired. "You can take the front seat." The girl said to the boy as she sat in the back. A nice good night's sleep would do. But of course that didn't happen because as they arrived to the house and walked in, everything was gone.
What was the best day ever turned into the worst day ever.
