"You'll have to stop eventually, little Mae," the voice cooed, I ran down the hall as fast as I could, but it was never enough and it never would be, "...you'll never get away."
I let out an ear splintering scream, "Nooooo! Don't hurt me!" I screamed just as his nasty arms wrapped around me.
"No can do, Mae, I can't help it, I'm me," his words were breathy, I screamed causing him to flinch slightly. His check cracked, and light skinned through.
I'm dreaming, I thought to myself, it's just a dream. Only a dream.
I sat up straight, breathing heavily and covered in a cool sweat. My heart was currently imprinting itself into my ribcage as I scanned the dark room. Shadows flashed everywhere, I trembled with fear, I couldn't see Chloe. She'd went to sleep on the love seat that was new in my room, and now I couldn't find her in the mass of blankets.
I checked the clock, 1:30 a.m.. Great, up at one in the frickin morning. I stood slowly, making my way across the room to the love seat, where I began to see Chloe. I blinked a couple times, I'm so going insane. Nightmares and hallucinations.
I knew I wouldn't be falling asleep anytime soon, so I headed to the bathroom and hopped in the shower, hoping it wouldn't wake anyone. I wasn't in the mood to deal with people right now, I really only wanted to see Colt, because the nightmares were getting worse, and I actually remembered this one. It was too early for that though.
I washed quickly for the second time, before hopping out and getting dressed. I looked at my reflection in the mirror, only to find little purple half moons under my eyes, which looked exhausted.
I sighed, perfect, now both Colt and Chloe would be worried today. I went to grab foundation from my drawer, only to see a shadow flash past the window behind the drawn curtains. I froze, before getting my butt into gear and crawling out of the bathroom and into my room to wake Chloe. Did I really want to get my friend involved with this though? Whatever 'this' was.
I stood still for a moment, watching the windows, trying to gauge where the person was hiding.
"Chloe," I whispered, "Chloe, wake up."
She didn't move, only began to snore softly. Maybe it was just a bird, I was on the second floor. But that wasn't a bird shadow. It had looked human...
"Chloe," I still felt the need to wake her, "Chloe, come on, wakeup."
I took a tiny step closer to Chloe, trying to push away the feeling of being watched. What was going on? My ears seemed to prick, I heard a door squeak open. My eyes wide, I raced to Chloe's side and hopped onto the coach and under the blanket with her. She woke up immediately.
"Ali...?" She mumbled.
"Shhhh," I shushed her, throwing the blanket over our head and keeping my ears open.
Even if I couldn't see her, I knew Chloe had her eyes on me. Our arms were wrapped around each other, as we both took in our surroundings with just our ears. I could hear footsteps trying to be quiet on the marble of the stairs. Then nothing. My mums room was about where they'd disappeared, so it was either my mum or someone visiting my mum.
I sat up, taking the blankets with me. Chloe stood too.
"What're you doing?" She whisper-yells.
"I'm going to go see what's going on," I whispered.
"I swear, you've stolen my bravado," she fidgeted, something she rarely did.
"Stay here, alright? I'm gonna go check on my mum."
She stayed quiet, though I knew she wanted so badly to stop me. The only thing she didn't do was stay put. Chloe followed me out of my room and now the two of us were inching our way across the hall to my mothers room.
The door was cracked and I could just barely hear the muted conversation going on inside.
I moved closer to the door, peering through the crack. Inside, my mother dressed in her pajamas was running her hands through her hair and nodding nervously.
"Listen, Bell," the man said, "Its just plain stupid to divorce your husband, you'd get nothing with just ending up with me."
"You're wrong, I'd get love, and trust me it's a huge strain on a marriage if your no longer in love with the person you married," mum stood from her bed, trying to convince this strange man to stay obviously.
"Bell, I love you, but you'd never be able to keep the house, I only work in the summer with construction," the man hugged my mum, "You'd wind up on the streets, think about your daughter."
"Alice would be fine, Gerald," she insisted, "And we wouldn't end up in the streets, I have a good job."
"How would she react if she found out about us?" He wondered, pulling back a little bit to watch my mums face.
Shocked, completely shocked and betrayed. That's what I felt.
"She wouldn't be happy, and I've already been a terrible mother...but she would adjust, Alice is a very strong girl."
"Well she does have a very strong mother," he states, leaning down to kiss her. I rush back to my room, my breathing erratic and tears in my eyes. So my mum had ended it, ended the marriage and called for a divorce. Which meant she had lied to me.
"Ali, calm down," whispered Chloe cautiously, "They're going to hear you."
"I don't care," I put my head between my knees and tries to take deep breaths. I soon heard Chloe getting on the phone when I couldn't calm down and speaking with someone. I couldn't focus on that though, with the nightmare and my mother lying to me I was pretty occupied.
Soon Chloe wrapped her arm around me and pulled me into standing position, "Colten is coming to pick you up, alright?"
I hugged my best friend as she helped me quiet down a little, enough to keep my mother and her...whatever he was from hearing us make our way down the hallway and down the stairs. She held me in her arms as we waited in the entrance, listening closely for the sound of Colt's truck.
When we heard his truck's rumble, Chloe wrapped me in one of her sweatshirts and helped me out the door, where Colt met us. Colt immediately wrapped his arms around me, "What's wrong, Ali? What happened?"
"Colten, just take her somewhere else and try to calm her down, okay?" Chloe told him, looking back into the dark house, "When you do calm her down, she's gonna need someone to talk to. Right now, you're the best person because I'm not sure how to handle this situation."
With that Colt lead me to his truck, never once removing his arm from around me, as if I were the most fragile thing in the world. He helped me get into the car, buckling me in before heading round to the drivers side and hopping in.
He automatically grabbed my hand, I stared straight ahead tears forming in my eyes.
"Ali," his hand now had both of my hands, his hand was on fire compared to mine. I didn't even glance at him, too lost in my own world. My mum had cheated on my dad and they were getting a divorce because of her. Worse yet she wanted to marry the guy. Oh and another thing, I had to go to court and face Mr. Solons. My life was going to shit right in front of me.
I felt Colt pull over to the shoulder of the road, and unbuckle me before he cradled me in his arms.
"Ali, you're alright, I'm here," he murmured, forcing me to meet his eyes, "What's wrong?"
I shook my head and buried my face in his chest, wrapping my arms around his neck to hold myself up. His arms were wrapped around me, holding me close as he rubbed my back.
"You're alright," he whispered in my ear, hugging me tighter, "I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you, I'm here."
I kissed his neck, my way of saying thanks and rested my head fully in his chest. He kept one arm around me as he began driving again.
"Where do you want to go?" He asked, rubbing my back with his free hand. I didn't respond, because I honestly couldn't care less where we went as long as he stayed with me.
Colt drove slowly, taking his time getting to wherever we were heading. I didn't mind, I was calming down, if even just a little.
"I hope you don't mind if we go to my Grams house," he murmured, "I think that's the best place right now."
I blinked, slowly at first before I kept my eyes closed. No more nightmares tonight, not with Colten here to protect me.
