'His greenie' | Newt x reader

Y/n POV
I have a whole bedroom to myself, alby thought it was best considering I was a girl and shouldn't be sharing with the boys.

I sit on the bed, staring at my lap as I fiddle with my thumbs. Something about that Thomas boy seemed familiar, like I knew him.. it couldn't be possible, I can't remember anything but surely I would remember if I knew him.

My thoughts were shattered as a loud obnoxious knock came at the door. I stumble towards the door expecting newt, or alby standing there. "Hey greenie! I heard you were in the medjack hut are you ok? You're the first girl! I asked newt if he knew where u was he said you were injured and then I sa-" the boy stopped talking "sorry.. I tend to ramble on" he looked no older than 12, a little chubby with brown curly hair that came down past his eyes. I laugh at him leaving him confused.

"Don't worry about it, everyone seems a bit excited today" I assure him. "And your name is?" I stare blankly at him waiting for an answer "Chuck my names Chuck"
I smile "well Chuck nice to meet you" I extend out my hand to shake his.

"I'm supposed to take you to dinner before the bonfire" his eyes lit up at the word bonfire, almost like he had never seen one.

I cock my head sideways.. "bonfire" I ask hesitatingly , I didn't want him to think I was stupid.

"We have one every month for the new greenie, last month was Thomas, this month it's you!"

I nod my head in understanding before following him down for dinner.

Dinner was lovely, I finished it in less than 10 minutes, earning a few laughs from the boys at the table, I was sat with Thomas, Minho, newt and Chuck, considering I knew them the best. I offered gally a seat but he furrowed his eyebrows at me and walked away, he seems to do that a lot..

It was finally time for the 'bonfire' that everyone seems so excited about.

I sit down on a log, watching the boys dance, and drink this yellow stuff from tin cups. It looked disgusting.

Someone sat beside me, I turn my head to see newt smiling, "Enjoying the party?" He asks me, His British accent stuttering at the word 'party' safe to say I think he's drunk. "It's great, I'm just a bit confused about a few things" I turn my gaze to him. "If you have any questions, I'm happy to try an answer them" he smiles at me reassuringly. "The walls.." I begin "why are they there?"

Newt sighs and drops his head before picking it back up to answer me "to protect us" he took another sip of his drink and then stares at me. "From what.. what do we need protecting from?" Worry fills my face.

"It's a maze.. there's these creatures.. we call them grievers, they're dangerous, that's why we only have runners go into the maze, anyone else not a runner cannot go in, if they do they get punished" he burped after his sentence. "Sorry" he added making me laugh.

"But what about-" I started

"Listen greenie we have 3 rules here, rule 1. No slackers, we all need a job. Rule2. No physical harm to another glader, I think that one is pretty self explanatory, and rule 3. Don't EVER go beyond these rules unless you're a runner"

I open my mouth to respond, but my attention was grabbed elsewhere.

"Gally , gally , gally" I snap my head back to see gally and some other glader fighting, I stood to my feet "but.. they're fighting!"

Newt laughs at me, "it's called the circle, it's not actually fighting, they're not going to kill eachother, it's for fun" I look down at him 'fun' how was hurting someone else 'fun'

I shake my head, turning my attention back to newt. "I'm going to go to bed, goodnight newt" I get up to leave.

"Want me to come with?" I watch as colour drains from his face in realisation of what he just said "no thanks" I laugh before walking towards the homestead.

"I DIDNT MEAN IT LIKE THAT!!" He yells after me ,I laugh even harder before saying "of course you didn't" under my breath and going to bed.
