Bucky's POV
Being apart from her was agony. I avoided it when I could. The dread of something happening when I wasn't around, that I wouldn't be able to protect her... it would consume me. I felt responsible for all the pain and suffering she had endured. I made a vow to myself to never let that happen again. I would put myself in harm's way before I would ever let her suffer again.
But I understood she needed to get checked, and I needed to train. If I was going to protect her I needed to be in shape. I took out my frustration on the punching bag in front of me, zoning out the rest of the team as they trained.
"Buck. She's fine." Steve took me by surprise as I hadn't even notice him approach me.
"I know... I just." I took a second to let out a sigh. If anyone could understand me, it would be Steve. "I don't like being away from her. With everything that has happened Steve, I feel like if I'm not by her side I might lose her again."
She is my anchor. What brought me back, what kept me going. I knew even as when I was the Winter Soldier, there was always something there. It was her. It has always been her.
"I know." I could see similar emotions running through Steve's face. While (Y/N) was my anchor, she was practically his sister. "But she's safe here in the tower. Nothing is going to hurt her. Especially not with us here."
I nodded. "I still don't like it."
"Hey boys... anyone care to spar?" We turned to see Natasha on the mat. Everyone else was sitting on the sidelines, their training complete. "I'm done whipping these guys into shape. I think a couple of old men won't be too hard."
I can see a smirk on Steve's face, and I get a wicked idea. "Nah. I'm good. But this old man needs a good spanking." I push Steve towards the mat. Walking to sit with everyone on the sidelines I laugh as I see Steve's flustered face.
"Twenty says she beats Steve." Clint practically laughs.
"I will second that. Lady Natasha fights like a Valkyrie." Thor clapped, amused to watch the spar.
"Nah. Twenty he'll beat her." Sam says shaking his head.
"Oh I think you're all wrong..." I chuckled as we watched Natasha and Steve begin to spar. I could tell things were getting interesting, the intense tension between the two starting to build. Always the trying to be the best wing-man to my friend that I could be I started kicking everyone out of the room. Clint and Sam kept groaning about the bet, not wanting to leave.
"Oh I understand! They wish to enter a mating ritual. Yes yes! Let's leave them to it." Thor laughed as he helped my push the men out of the room, laughing at Clint and Sam's shocked faces as that was way too much information for them. I glanced back at the sparring couple, who hadn't noticed our departure, just as we were leaving the room Natasha pinned him on the mat. I could see Steve's intention as he flips her to her back. A stupid grin falls on my face. You go Steve. Get your girl.
Now time to go find mine.
I stopped by the lab to see if (Y/N) was still there. But was only greeted to the sight of Tony and Bruce fiddling with the stupid cursed scepter. I didn't even go in, I hated that stupid piece of metal.
She must have gone to our room. Our room. It had been a while since we shared a space. And although I had stayed with her in the medical bay, I was always on a chair in her bedside. It had been forever since we shared a private space together. I had been another person. Could we still take part in that far away life we once both shared? I hoped so. I longed for the feeling of something we lost so long ago, the perfect bliss we had shared.
As I neared our room I heard a small noise. Faint at first, but it got a bit louder as I neared the room. Panic started to rise in me as the noise was definitely coming from our room. When I opened the door I immediately discovered the source of the sound.
(Y/N) was writhing in bed, a light glow encompassing her, grunts and small cries escaping her lips. I ran to her side at once, the sight of her in this state causing my panic to rise further. "Doll wake up!" I shook her, trying snap her awake. But I got no reaction. My panic turned into fear as she wouldn't respond. I shook her once more, pleading with her "Angel, come on... wake up!"
At once her eyes snapped open, an eerie yellow glow to them. She jerked her body out of my grasp and towards the far end of the bed in a quick movement. Then slowly her the glow in her eyes faded, as did the glow surrounding her body. Her breathing was erratic, fear and confusion in her eyes.
Slowly she recognized where she was and who woke her. Her breathing calmed, her expression softened. "Buck?"
Her voice was soft, but I could tell she was scared. It hurt to see her so fragile. The (Y/N) I knew was never this fragile. Time had changed her as well.
"It's me doll. It's Bucky."
A soft whimper left her body as she scurried back across the bed, straight into my arms. I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight. I allowed myself to breathe again, the panic and fear slowly subsiding. We stayed in that embrace for a while, as both our heartbeats gained a relaxed rhythm, beating together in time. Finally feeling that enough time had passed, I spoke softly. "Are you okay?"
She dug her face deeper into by body, I could feel as she shook her head to signify a no.
Worry creeped up again. "Do you want me to call Bruce?" Deep down whether she said no, I knew I would be calling him anyways.
At first she didn't give me an answer. I toyed with the idea of just picking her up and taking her to Bruce straight away. But I held back, not wanting to agitate her.
Eventually she shook her head to signify another no. She then spoke softly, "I'm okay."
That's a lie. "Doll..."
"No really I'm okay. I don't know what happened. But I'm fine now. Honestly." She broke our embrace and looked me in the eyes as she repeated the lie.
A part of me wanted to push, to make her admit she wasn't okay. But I wouldn't. I understood she needed time. I would give her that. But I will be mentioning this to Bruce the first chance I get. "Okay." I nodded, then brought her back into my arms, more for selfish purposes than to comfort her. I wanted her close, I wanted to take in her scent and memorize it.
She sighed into me, accepting the comfort of my arms. "Thank you Buck."
"Anytime sweetheart."
After a while I could feel that she drifted off back to sleep. Softly and carefully I picked her up in my arms and gently laid her down comfortably on the bed. Pulling the covers over her frame I couldn't help but brush the stray strands of hair from her face, placing a soft kiss on her forehead.
I wanted nothing more than to lie next to her in bed, just taking every detail of her in. But I knew there was something more pressing to take care of first. Where can I find Banner? I quietly walked out of the room, closing the door softly behind me as to not wake (Y/N). "JARVIS?"
"Yes Mr. Barnes?" I will never get used to talking to the air.
"Where can I find Banner?"
"Mr. Banner is currently in the lab with Mr. Stark. Shall I let them know you are looking for them?"
"No. I'll go talk to them there. Thank you JARVIS."
"You're welcome Mr. Barnes."
