Your POV
"She's a teacher." Lydia smiled.
"How'd you know?" I smiled at Lydia
"Only teachers where those shoes." She pointed to my small red kitten heel shoes. "That and I also follow you on Instagram."
"Well damn, I guess I'm already looking the part."
"I meant the kids at your school love you. They say you always have things to show them."
"Mostly stuff from my mom. She's the history nerd."
"And now you are."
I nodded at her and everyone started to slowly walk to the kitchen.
I took my eyes to notice Derek was standing in the corner. I glanced occasionally at him to see if he'd notice me. He never did.
I piped up and told them I was going to head outside for a second to breathe. When I did, Derek followed me.
I stood on the porch and waited for Derek to speak.
"Hey." He started. I didn't really know how I should react. Last night on the plane I had run over things I could have said, feelings I could have expressed first but when it all came down to it, nothing exploded like I thought it would.
"Hi." I replied. He looked at me and I looked him in the eyes. He looked so desperate to say some words that didn't fall out of his mouth. So I did what I only knew Derek to be good at, physical contact so I hugged him. He pressed me into him, his face burying into my neck.
When we pulled away from each other he sighed.
"Look, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I don't know why I said the things I said. I was rude and thoughtless. I hurt your feelings and I shouldn't have. None of what I even said was true. I was in love at 16 once and so for me to say that was hypocritical. I'm sorry."
"It's alright Derek. To be honest, I don't feel bad about my past self being in love with you because I really was. I had more real feelings for you than anyone else. Still than anyone else."
"Really?"
"Really. I was more in love with you then than I ever have been."
"What about now?" He asked
"What about now?" I responded
"Are you in love with someone now?"
"No, I'm bitterly single." I laughed "what about you? Any ladies interested?"
"In my love or my soul? Those are two different things."
"Uh oh. Some bad judgement happen?"
"A lot of bad judgement... twice."
"Yikes... Wanna talk about it?"
"Well the first one tried to kill me, pull me apart, use me and abuse me because she was looking for human sacrifices. And the second one was a secret assassin who was solely convinced no one would love her. And oh yeah you missed the back story. I hooked up with Kate a while ago."
I just blinked at him trying to process what had just happened.
"I'm sorry. Who was this human sacrifice?"
"No no. She wasn't the sacrifice. She wanted sacrifices. She-she was a monster, who gained power off of human sacrifices."
"Oh" I squeaked "fun. Wait- you hooked up with Kate?!"
"Yep."
"As in Kate, Kate argent?"
"Yep."
"The blonde psycho chick who burned your family alive?"
"Well at the time I didn't know she's the one who did it."
"Still. Kate?"
"Yes Kate!" He shouted
"Okay." I raised my hands in defense. "Well I haven't had any psychotic killer partners so I think I'm winning here."
"Good for you. Not hard to beat."
"I'm fact I haven't had anyone."
"You haven't dated since high school?"
"Nope."
"Why not?"
"I-uh- I never got over you." I mumbled.
Derek was quiet for a minute before he stepped closer. All I saw were his shoes stepping closer to mine.
"Y/n..." he started lowly "look at me." I saw his fingers press my chin upwards to meet his eyes.
His eyes were really green after the sun had set. The red blasted into his corneas and illuminated his orbs of emerald.
"I love you." He stated
"No you don't."
"Yes i do."
"Derek it's been four years, you can drop the act. You don't have to do this because you feel bad."
"It's been four years and I'm still saying that I'm not doing it because I feel bad. I'm doing it because it's true. I love you. I love you more than anything. I loved you when you were 16 and I love you now. I was just so terrified of everything that could have happened that I took it out on you. If you could ever forgive me deep down, I want you to give me a chance."
"Derek I can always forgive you."
"No, I mean actually forgive me. Don't just forget about what happened. I want you to know it happened and remember it but decide it doesn't define our relationship. Can you do that?"
"Yes. I can. Because you matter more to me than some words you told me four years ago. I forgive you."
The corners of Dereks mouth upturned which was a rare sight. He scooped me into him and pulled my lips into his. I rested my hand on his beard which felt funny on my fingers.
"You still smell like you did last time I saw you."
"Am I supposed to smell different?"
"No, I just like this smell. There are a lot of good memories tied to this smell."
"A lot of hugs." I laughed
"A lot." He hummed. He finally let me go and looked at me. "So you're a teacher huh?"
"Yeah. I teach history."
"You're not a sacrificial demon are you?"
"Was your mistake lady a teacher too?"
"Yeah."
"Okay." I sighed in desperation
"We will just... not talk about it."
"Oh no I'm gonna make fun of you."
"God please don't if you do ill kill you."
"You won't kill me you love me."
"I don't I'm just madly in love with you."
"There's a difference?"
"Actually yeah you see..."
The night had set and the porch which was once creaking with tension had boiled down to slabs of wood laced with love. After they had gone inside, y/n had chosen Derek to be her pillow. The flight was starting to catch up to her and she felt her eyes close slowly.
"Go to sleep." Derek whispered to her before he kissed her forehead. "I'll keep you safe."
