"A nightmare?" I asked groggily but my heart was racing.
"You were crying in your sleep." Derek wiped his thumb over my cheek and I noticed it was wet.
"I'm sorry if I woke you up." Derek took a seat next to me on the bed.
"No I wasn't asleep. I was still reading. It's only been like an hour. But your dream got pretty bad huh?"
"Y-yeah. To be honest I don't really know what happened. It was so dark and all I heard were faded voices."
"What did you hear?"
"Two people, a man and a woman, talking. It felt... so real. More like a memory being replayed than a dream."
"What did they say?"
"Something about not being able to take someone? It was dangerous."
"Like the person was dangerous?"
"Kind of. Yeah. They said that the person would trap them."
"Okay."
"But they also said that the person was in danger. That they were going to lead a life of torment if they went with the woman."
"What about the man?"
"He was scared of clawing the person."
"Could it have been parents talking about a baby?" Derek asked quietly
"You don't think-"
"Im just saying it's possible." He shrugged
"I don't know... it seems hard to believe. I was a baby when they gave me up."
"You'd be impressed what the brain can remember especially when you're in the subconscious."
"Is that your nerdy Doctor brain talking?"
"Maybe a little." He chuckled.
"Well maybe you should keep your doctor brain out of it for a while." I gently suggested "just until we are both sound of mind. Go to bed. We can talk about it when you wake up."
"Okay. But promise you're not going to just run from this. It could be who you are."
"I promise."
"Okay. Goodnight."
I watched as Derek walked to the couch and covered himself with a blanket. He sighed and then turned away from me. I rested my head on the pillow still facing him but closed my eyes.

I saw the light behind my eyes as my brain cleared the fog away. I rubbed my dry face and opened my eyes to look around. I was still at Derek's. I looked over hoping to see Derek but he wasn't there. In fact I was looking at a different part of the room. I turned to see Derek's figure still curled up. I took a silent breath of relief. I sat up and reached for my phone. Six am. It was six am. I groaned quietly and laid back down. I imagine derek had work today but had no idea what time he had to wake up. I stepped out of bed and let the cold floor attack my feet. I jumped at the change in temperature but got used to it quickly. I walked to the kitchen and saw he had a coffee maker.
Okay. We are getting somewhere
I opened the fridge and saw some breakfast items. I took them out and started to cook quietly, not wanting to wake Derek just yet. I started the coffee and the trickle of dark roast made my heart sing.
I heard movement from across the room and saw Derek sit up slumping over.
"Good morning. I didn't mean to wake you."
"No it's okay. I have to get up anyway."
"Right. I assumed you had to go in to work today."
"Yeah. What are you doing?" He walked over.
"I made you breakfast. And coffee." I laughed
"Wow. I don't think I've ever had time to eat like this before work."
"Well.. consider it a thank you for letting me stay."
He grabbed a plate and loaded it with his breakfast before sitting down to eat. He grabbed his shirt from the chair and pulled off his tank top. I averted my gaze to the ceiling above me.
When I looked back down he had his button up on and doing the last button as he took another bite.
"Slow down will you? You're gonna choke." I laughed
"I don't really have time." He chugged his coffee and put on his pants and socks while stealing a couple more bites.
He put the plate in the sink and pulled on his shoes and coat.
"Uh Derek." I stopped.
"What?"
"Your shirt is buttoned wrong."
He looked down to see his shirt was lopsided.
I laughed and helped him button his shirt properly.
"There. Don't you need a tie?"
"Oh crap yeah."
"Here." I grabbed the one that was on his desk and quickly tied it.
"Thanks." He nodded and looked at me.
It was then I realized how close we were. And his eyes were really green. And despite being a doctor he didn't have wrinkles of stress like I would have assumed.
"Have a good day at work."
"Thank you." He grabbed his bag and turned to me.
"Oh and feel free to go shopping today." He handed me a card "get whatever you want. On me."
He rushed out before I could even retaliate.
"Okay then." I turned back and remembered I needed clothes.
"I need to find the washer and dryer for my-" I walked back over to my bed and stopped mid sentence to see my clothes clean dry and folded next to the bed.
"When did he do this?" I scoffed.
I picked out a casual outfit and headed to the store.
While I was in I found a few decorations that I knew he wouldn't mind. I was going to get him to decorate one way or another. I found my supplies and checked out. When I got back I unloaded all my stuff and set up the decor I found. I had bought a picture frame but had no picture to put in it. I looked around and decided to search the desk for a picture. I found a black and white image which looked like a man who resembled Derek and a woman.
"Maybe his parents?" I thought aloud and put the picture in the frame.
I spent the day cleaning the dust bunnies from the corners of the room and making dinner for when Derek got back. He told me he'd be home shortly so I started to prep.
When Derek got home the house smelled of smoked meat and grilled chicken.
"It's smells amazing in here." Derek said taking his tie off.
"Oh yeah I made something for dinner. There's a lot left if you're hungry."
"Of course I am. I work in a hospital with no breaks." He was practically drooling as I gathered his plate.
He sat down and ate quickly.
"Did you get everything you needed?" He asked
"Yeah I did." He looked around and then saw the picture frame on his desk. He grabbed it.
"Where'd you get this?"
"Oh I saw the frame on sale at the store and I found the picture in your desk."
"This is my parents." He didn't sound too happy about my discovery.
"I'm sorry if I invaded your space."
"It's fine... I just... still miss them."
"Understandable." I sat next to him.
"It's hard to see this picture sometimes. To see them smiling and so in love."
"Makes you miss them huh?"
"Yeah. A lot. It also makes me wonder if I'll ever feel like that. Like the way they do in this."
"Of course you will." I nodded while looking him in the eyes.
"You think so?"
"Absolutely. Someone is bound to love you. I mean look at you! You're handsome, and rich, and smart."
"You think I'm handsome?"
"Oh come on Derek. You'd have to be blind to not think you're attractive. It's just a fact." Derek had set his fork down now as he got into the conversation
"No tell me more about how you think I'm handsome."
"I will eat your food if you don't turn around and drop it."
"Okay okay." He gave up and continued eating. "If you want to change the subject we could try to find out who your parents are. Maybe that will tell us who you are?"
"All I remember about my childhood is a lot of feathers and fur."
"Okay. So maybe you're like a were...eagle?"
"Really? A were eagle?
"I don't know I'm trying!"
"What about your stupid book thingy? What feathery creatures are in there?"
Derek grabbed the book off his desk and flipped through the pages
"Phoenix, Cupid, pixie, shapeshifter or if it fits a chimera form."
"Okay well I can't light things on fire, I'm not a master of love, I don't have magic and I can't shift into anything."
"Okaayyy." Derek looked in the book again. "What else do you remember?"
"I don't know just a bunch of weird history."
"What kind?"
"Greek? I guess?"
"What stories do you remember?"
"Something about a judgement... on a guy named Paris? And..." I scanned my brain for distant calls of stories "one about a guy who fell in love with his own statue. Just a lot about love I guess."
"So your mom must have loved Aphrodite."
"What?"
"The two stories? Those both have aphrodite in them. Goddess of love?"
"I know who Aphrodite is. But why would my mom tell me stories about her?"
"Well maybe that has something to do with her. She could be a descendant of them."
"Wait..." I slammed my hand on the book "she had wings."
I walked up to his stack of books.
"Do you have anything on Greco-Roman mythology?"
"Yeah, blue one on the top."
I pulled it and opened the index.
"Arrows... arrows? Something about arrows."
"Arrows? Like the weapon?"
"Yeah I think..." I flipped through the book but nothing seemed to make sense.
"Did you mean Eros? Like the god?"
"Eros! Yes! Okay he had wings."
"But you said it was your mom who had wings."
"Okay. So what Greek mythology has wings? And also ties to Aphrodite and Eros?" I shook my head
"The Erotes."
"The what?"
Derek flipped the pages of the book till he landed on an image of a painting
"The erotes. They were basically like Aphrodites posse. Little winged people who could influence love."
"No. You're not saying-"
"You're Cupid."
"But I can't do magic! I can't influence people to be in love!"
"Think about it! It makes sense!"
"I can't be fucking Cupid. I don't have wings!"
"Well technically you wouldn't be fully Cupid because it seems to me like your mother fell in love with a werewolf."
"So... I'm a were...Cupid?"
"Well well well. Look at that. You're a mutt."
I smacked his shoulder and he whined but rubbed his shoulder and moved on.
"So what are you going to do with your new found identity?"
"Sleep. Because I can't handle this right now."
"Hey, it doesn't change anything. You're still you." Derek reassured me.
I just nodded in agreement and walked to the bed. I curled myself in and sighed.
"Cuddle in darling."
"I'm scared Claire."
"Jess and I will hold you till you feel better."
"You're the best family I could ask for."
"And you're the best family we could have found."
My heart hurt as I remembered the warmth their arms used to bring me. It was where I went every time I was sad or scared. And it was gone.
"Y/n?" Derek asked
I looked over at him.
"Are you okay?" He asked. I shook my head in honesty. "What can I do to help?"
"Can I have a hug?"
"I don't really do hugs... but I'll make an exception for you."
I sat up and slumped my body against his. I buried my face into his neck and sighed.
"It'll be okay. This doesn't have to change anything."
"But it does change things. I know what my parents are. And I'm supposed to be this super cool thing but I'm not. I don't have powers or transform into anything. I'm just... boring."
"No, you are you. And you don't need powers to make you cool. You're already cool enough."
"You think?" I said still a puddle in Derek's arms.
"I know."
I separated from him and falsely smiled. He pushed some hair away from my face and gave me the same false smile.
"Will you stay with me tonight?" I whispered looking down.
"Like in bed with you?"
"Yes."
"Only if you're comfortable with it. And as long as you understand that it doesn't mean anything."
"I understand."
"Okay. Yes i will."
He got in right next to me and I turned to face him. I cuddled into his side and he put his arm around me.
"The last person I stayed with did this for me. The nice woman and her daughter would cuddle me till I fell asleep. I miss feeling safe with someone." I spoke tiredly.
"You're safe with me."
