The crime scene is where everything begins. A victim or witness calls 911, and the dispatcher sends out police to the scene. The first responding officer does a run through of the scene to check for any possible criminals that could still be around.

Then, they secure the scene and help any surviving victims who are injured. Once the scene is secured and the victims are taken care of, the crime scene investigators are brought in. The lead investigator does an initial search of the area. They are checking for any signs that could give them an idea of what the crime could possibly be.

The lead investigator will then report his or her findings to the team. The lead investigator exits the crime scene, and the sketchers enter the scene to sketch every detail of the area, inside and out. Once the sketchers leave, the photographers enter and photograph everything.

The next step is for the evidence search team to search for and mark anything that could be used as evidence. Then, sketches with measurements are taken, photographs of the marked evidence are taken, and the evidence collection team goes in and collects the evidence. This evidence is then packaged, labeled, initialed, and sent to the labs for testing and examination.
