My POV
"Alright, Sparky, let's see it," I said, stepping back from the carefully constructed pile of wood.
Zuko rolled his eyes before pointing two fingers at my pile and igniting the logs. "Wow," I breathed, earning the ghost of a smile from my friend.
I sat down crosslegged across from him and started divvying up some food. I had to admit, this new person I was traveling with was way hotter (fire pun very intended) than Lee, the fake without a past. As I went to hand Zuko his food, I realized he had been watching me.
"What?" I asked, laughing nervously.
"Nothing..." maybe it was the fire dancing on his face, but I would have sworn he was blushing, "I guess I just still can't accept that you're okay with this—with me."
I sighed and gave him a gentle smile, before moving to sit right next to him. I didn't miss how Zuko recoiled a bit at the closeness. "My mom taught me that everyone is a little good and a little bad. Sometimes one stands out more than the other."
"And the bad stands out a lot for me?"
I shrugged, "You are temperamental and unfriendly and grouchy. But you also saved me and you're also my..." I trailed off, meeting his amber eyes. The word "friend" seemed stuck on my tongue, like it didn't quite fit. Instead, I just finished with, "...Y'know."
Zuko just nodded, gazing into the flames. After a moment of silence, he just murmured, "Thank you."
"For what?"
He met my eyes then, and I choked on my own breath—those eyes! And I'd never seen the look on his face—soft, vulnerable. "Just...for everything. For being you. And...I...I just think..."
The next second, Zukos lips were on mine. It only lasted a second, before he pulled away, bright crimson. But I took his face in both my hands and pulled him back in. After a longer moment, we pulled away just an inch. I ran my thumb along the scar tissue on his cheek and he closed his eyes against my touch.
After a moment, he tried again, "I...um...I...am usually more articulate than this I'm promise."
I laughed, "It's okay. I know what you mean. I feel the same way."
"Really?"
"Mhm,"
Zuko shook his head, "You are fucking insane then."
