The seas were reckless this fateful night. All the crew members of Captain Caviar's ship were swaying back and forth, not knowing anymore their proper sense of direction. "Starboard from here! Steer clear of jagged rocks and sea creatures!" the Captain instructed. All hands were on deck now, the mountains of waves crashed onto the ship repeatedly before the crew were forced to head back home, prolonging the search for a missing merfolk.
Deep in the said seas of the most fearful mermaid ever, there was a small mermaid, swimming aimlessly without a single clue of where they were. It was...cold, colder than usual and very dark at the floor of the sea. Where was y/n? Suddenly, a large figure swam above them, the shadow casted sending a shiver down the mermaid's spine, rushing for cover from the beast. From the small cave entrance, they could only make out the long hair of the other and spear they held. Who were they, and how did they grow to be so large?
It felt like running was pointless, y/n could be crushed in mere seconds! In the agony of it all, y/n was lost, and they weeped tears of gold, shivering at the thought of being found by the larger fish. Literal gold tears hit the sandy floor, small thuds that alarmed the bigger fish someone was nearby. This other fish was of course Black Pearl, she heard someone crying, in clear pain.
"Hello?" she asked, searching her area. No one replied back. It was only when she knelt down to the ground that she saw a small opening, spotting y/n who was trying to calm down.
"Hey, why are you crying?" Pearl probed. The sniffling and whimpers stopped, y/n turning around slowly to see a large eye staring inside of the cave.
"Wh-who are y-you!?" y/n stammered, swimming far back in the cave before bumping into the wall.
"Calm down, I'm just another fish like you" Pearl scoffed.
"Like me?" y/n wondered. How else was Pearl supposed to prove to the smaller one that she indeed was like them? "I live in the water and have a tail, don't I?" she answered, waiting for y/n to say something. They were hesitant, still terrified of the much larger sea cookie. "I'm y/n...and I'm lost" the small one informed Pearl. "Oh, I'm Black Pearl" she greeted, scooting back for the other to exit the cave. Black Pearl was indeed big, having to look almost directly up to see their face. "Swim up here so I can see you better" Pearl commanded y/n.
"Oh, alrighty" the mermaid replied, now at exact eye to eye level.
"Aw, you're actually tiny" Pearl awed, one of her fingers nudging y/n's stomach playfully.
"Black Pearl, miss, could you please help me back home?" y/n pleaded.
"Home? I thought you were from around here" she assumed. Now her expression seemed crossed, thinking hard on the matter. Oh- she then remembered y/n was lost. "How's it possible you just wound up in my sea then?" she snarled, dangerously close to y/n with their spear gripped tightly. "Woah woah, I actually mean it! I just happened to swim too far from my buddies" the tiny mermaid awkwardly smiled.
Black Pearl didn't trust that smile at the moment, but to get this fish out of her territory quicker, it wouldn't hurt to leave home for a bit and escort y/n home. "Alright fine, but try anything and I'll crumble you to bits" Pearl heaved. "Please don't crumble me" y/n begged.
Their journey was a long one, but because of Pearl's immense size, most known terrors of the water seemed to be less dangerous with her around. Y/n felt honestly safe around Pearl despite being threatened earlier! "Do you recognize this area at all?" Pearl queued. Y/n spun around, hoping any detail of the corals or kelp would help trigger their memory. "No, it all just looks the same" the little one sighed. It was drawing close to night now, hopefully they could find this place quick before some fishers began boating out.
"Let's try another coral cave from here, it's gotta be close" Pearl suggested.
"Okay" y/n replied, remaining close to the larger fish. Honestly, having someone who knew the seas like the back of their hand was reassuring, y/n though both of them were lost but no! Pearl always knew where she was, and y/n was just beginning to remember where they were. "Oh- oh I know this place! " Y/n cheered. They took a few more spins around before spotting their humble abode. "Jackpot!" they shouted, swimming down to the small entrance. A little too soon for a celebration as a net was casted down into the waters, catching Black Pearl.
"Black Pearl!" Y/n shouted, swimming back up to free her from the net.
"Damn these stupid fishermen-" Pearl cursed, wiggling about yet to no avail, stuck by the tail.
"Stay still, I have an idea!" y/n lit up. Other than crying gold, they could also make gold on command, creating a sharp object to break apart the net. Little snips here and there allowed Pearl to maneuver her tail once more, swimming down and letting the boat tip over. "We did it!" y/n beamed, arms out to hug Black Pearl. She froze in place, not knowing whether to return the favor or not. "Thanks, though I didn't really ask for it" she replied.
"What? They were about to take you away! I can't let a friend be taken from me" y/n whined.
"Friend? Ah sorry- I don't do friends anymore, it's a long story" she huffed out.
"Oh, well then...have this instead" y/n said, crafting something quick yet nice for the larger cookie. "What's this?" Pearl interrogated. "It's a golden heart, made only for you" the smaller one gleamed. A shiny little gift, but still heart-warming nonetheless. "Thank you" Pearl quietly spoke. Y/n headed home with their other fishy friends while Black Pearl swam back home, still clinging onto the heart-shaped gold.
