Lex POV
Why didn't something so obvious come to me before? I was looking for something where I could do an analysis. An empty notebook would do. It dawned on me. I finally knew what to do.
I grabbed a pen nimbly and analyzed every word. Every word spoken by Edge. He was trying to play invincible, but I had just discovered his weakness. Memory. When he first met me, he knew nothing about me. He only knew me because he was sitting in my mind. However, as soon as he came out of it, he forgot everything. You can see that he often forgets, it was felt from him. Only once did he seem insecure, but the truth is that he always hides it inside. In fact, he pretends to know something, improvises and plays. I think I have a way with him. I don't know if it's good enough, I'm running out of options. I know Peter can't do it alone. I have to think of something quickly, otherwise something terrible will happen to him.
James POV
The black, dark streets are the best place to think. The weather was silent, depressing and very stupefying. The perfect atmosphere for walking and pondering in solitude.
Peter hasn't given a sign of life since the mission with that android. I'm starting to worry, he's not answering texts, his phone is on mute. The worst part is that I can't do anything. Tracking the phone does nothing, something is blocking my signal. What have you gotten yourself into this time, Peter....
But it was scary here. The walls seemed to slowly approach and crush me. I could feel the ghostliness and the onslaught of darkness. I started to get slowly scared and quickened my step. I looked down. I had a strange feeling that someone was following me. If anything, I had my phone in my hand at all times. If Peter didn't show up, the police should.
I stopped abruptly. A sense of terror and panic attacked me. I looked rapidly and nervously to places where I seemed to see movement. I was not alone here. The air became heavy. Peter had taught me to fight, but I was too afraid. I was never physically strong, hence I would have trouble even with a single opponent. My legs were like cotton wool, I began to shake with fear.
"James!" I heard a woman's voice.
I jumped up in fright. The voice seemed strangely familiar to me, though not quite. I searched discreetly yet nervously with my eyes for its owner.
"Whoa, what's up!" I chuckled.
I managed to find the owner. I didn't know if I was dreaming, but she clung to the wall like Peter! She wasn't clinging to anything. I stood as if I had been caught off guard. I looked through her in disbelief. She looked so strangely familiar. I guess I'll have to replace my glasses....
"Don't be afraid. It's me, Lex. We used to chat. I'm buddies with Peter," she informed me.
With Peter? From his side, this "buddying up" looks different. I wonder if he knows that his object of sighs can also stick to the walls.
"Well, this one... but why are you sticking to the wall?" I asked, looking at her with big eyeballs.
The girl was serious and composed. She felt such freedom in her pose, she didn't even slip a bit. She was extremely focused, but also livid about something. A gentle glimmer of hope could be seen in her watchful eyes.
"I'll explain everything to you if you tell me who makes the suits for Spider-Man," she said, looking me straight in the eye.
She's asking too much from me. Might as well play along. Being Spider-Man's associate, I have to watch out for anyone who wants something from him. I'm his middleman, but his enemy could easily take advantage of that. I suspect what her suit is for, but I don't know her, at least not from that side. I still haven't gotten information from Peter either. Lex, for her part, looks like she has a ton of answers to my questions. First I have to make sure she's not faking it.
"Why should I trust you?" I asked, showing her my lack of trust.
I had nothing against her, but Peter had taught me that I had to separate the normal life from the less normal one. Hence, even if Lex seems like a nice person at school, who knows if she isn't like that after hours. She may be someone completely different, hence I have to be on my guard. I may not have extra senses like Peter, but I can sense danger.
Lex rolled her eyes. She bounced off the wall, then clung to it and immediately took a powerful leap again. She landed at the bottom of the corridor that connected the way between the buildings. But she was not clinging normally, but standing. She was defeating gravity. As if simply showing off with the walls wasn't enough....
Now I'm sure. I didn't think it was possible, and yet. Another spider has sprung into action and needs someone to help it spread its wings.
"I know of one," I mouthed staring at her like a holy image.
I went with her to my house. Her father wasn't there, so I don't have to explain who she is. All the way there she sat quietly and stared out the window. She was nervous and couldn't sit still. I could feel that something was bothering her. There were many things bothering me too. Peter was missing, this null, I don't even know if he is on our side and on top of that Lex, who has the same powers as my friend. I kept checking my phone, but he still gave no sign of life. It was as if it had evaporated.
Once I entered the apartment, Lex marveled at its luxury. Peter reacted the same way he did when he first visited me, which was ages ago. There is such similar energy in them. I couldn't notice it before, but now I have confidence that they are simply made for each other.
Perhaps I trusted her too soon, but I couldn't fool myself. She was now the only person who could help me find Peter. It was clear that she also cared. She even worried a lot when she mentioned Spider-Man. Some voice in the back of my head told me that she knew.
"But how can it be that you also have spider powers?" I broke the overwhelming silence, sitting down on the couch.
Lex stared at the view of the city outside the window. This was clearly not where her mind was, her thoughts wandering across the rooftops of the building in search of answers. But she refused to ignore me. She was just thinking too much.
"Probably just like Spider-Man," she replied, gazing out at the city skyline.
I got up and walked over to her. I stood next to her and crossed my arms. This whole situation, I feel that we are slowly losing control. I have such a confusion in my head, but I will try to help them both. That's what I'm for, after all.
"This, what do you need?" I asked.
Lex turned around. She looked straight into my eyes. They were so full, as if confidence had appeared in her. Peter usually does this look before something unusual. She had apparently also discovered her purpose.
"Something out of the ordinary," she confessed.
That was enough for me. I turned on my heel and told her to follow me. Now Professor Osborn sprang into action. I got into my father's secret laboratory, which had apparently already been in use. I didn't even have time to clean up here. There's too much going on here to just sit down and take samples in peace. I hope to get back to it at some point.
I cleared the trash off the table. I got up a couple of Peter's suit designs. I merged a couple of them, then added other enhancements. Meanwhile, while the printer created the suits, I busied myself with web launchers specifically for Lex. I had to take into account various factors, hence the composition of the web must be different.
Out of the corner of my eye I checked its condition. Once she was mega-confident, then she wondered what she was doing here. She was going through a crisis, but eventually made her choice. I smiled. This was the second time I had witnessed the birth of a hero.
I only wish Peter had been there for it. I'm starting to worry more and more about him.
