Ch 5- Grief and Faith

During the six years of training and fighting together, you and Levi had grown even closer, often sharing quiet moments together and holding onto that unspoken feeling in your hearts. You had each other's backs, and it showed in the countless times we had risked our own lives for the other, but we had also formed an unwavering trust that had only grown over the years. As for the squad, we had also formed a close-knit friendship with each other, and though Levi maintained his cold exterior, you could tell he cared deeply about the members.

You had grown close to Petra, seeing as you were the only girls in the squad, and would spend many spare moments chatting and laughing as your friendship grew. The dynamic reminded you of Isabel sometimes, and you were grateful for the connection you had despite her constant teasing whenever Levi showed his brief favouritism over you that you always brushed off. Eld was second in command after you and Levi, and he had shown countless times his strong sense of duty but also his ability to joke around and lighten a heavy atmosphere. Gunther was just as reliable as Eld, and despite his annoyance at Petra and Oulo's bickering, he was shown to have great respect and trust in our squad. Oulo was a very self-confident individual, to say the least, and loved to boast of his own successes. Despite Petra and you often getting annoyed at his attempt to mimic Levi, he was disciplined in battle, only being bested by you and Levi regarding individual Titan kills. Both You and Levi built a strong relationship with the squad members, and you were glad to see Levi grow to trust in new friendships despite the losses we both endured.

You now look past Levi to Hange, who is trotting down the street on their horse. We had an interesting relationship, to say the least. Despite your weariness at their over-brazen personality, after having more interactions with them, you had grown to trust Hange and even bemuse their easily excited character. Levi had slowly grown to do the same, though he never failed to complain of their stench and need for a bath. You then looked around at the crowd that had started to form around us. Where once people would look at us with disdain stood those with grins of hope and respect. Murmuring arose as we made our way closer to beyond the walls. It had been a shock to hear of the incident of the fall of Wall Maria only about a year after Levi, and you joined the Scouts, but it had also made us wearier of the true nature of the Titans and the threat they posed to humanity.

"They're here, the main force of the Survey Corps!"

"Commander Erwin, kill the Titans for us!"

You look up to see the blond ahead of us upon his white stallion, always with that same face of grim determination. You and Levi had also formed a strong relationship with Erwin, or "eyebrows", as Levi likes to say. He no longer doubted our loyalty towards him as we became the soldiers he often sought out to complete tasks or trust during Exhibitions like the one we would embark on now.

"Look, it's Captain Levi!"

"And is that... Captain [y/n]?!"

"Humanity's angel, she's even more beautiful in person!"

You shift uncomfortably at the proclamation as you try not to make much eye contact with the crowd.

"They say they're as strong as the entire brigade!"

The murmuring and shouts continued as you heard Levi mutter for them to shut up next to me, a deadly look on his face. You laugh at his proclamation as he continues to stare daggers ahead of him. "Come on, Levi, light up a little," you slightly nudge him despite more onlookers gazing at your smiling face. "Tch," Levi seems to tense up even more as he looks at the crowd's incessant stares. "If they knew how fussy you are, they wouldn't look at you with such admiration," you look up to Hange and share a knowing smile, while Levi continues silently onwards.

You hear a crank as we come to a halt, and Wall Rose opens up before us. "The Titans are right outside..." you looked over to see that Hange now had sparkles in their eyes beyond their glasses. "What kind of Titan will we see this time?" Hange clasped their hands together before shouting, "It'd be so great if we saw an Abnormal!" You let out a sigh at their usual excitement. "If you want an Abnormal, we have one right here," you mutter, looking to Hange, who looks around quickly at your statement, "Huh, where!?" Levi then yanks their head down to his eye level and mutters, "Right here," before looking at you, exasperated by their antics. Before he could say anything, though, you heard Erwin's voice call out, "Forward!" and we made our way beyond Wall Rose into the confines of the fallen Wall Maria.

"Stay close," you hear Levi mutter from your side as you look up to him and give him a grin, "you too," you mutter back as we make our way through to an all too familiar landscape and back into Titan territory. He gives you a nod as we continue along, not fraying too far from each other, not knowing what we will face within the conquered walls. Not knowing the disaster that would occur within Wall Rose mere moments after our departure.
