Roughly 40,000 years before the events of The Reaper's Trust, OSL's universe nurtured a mere three planets of note. These are commonly called progenitor planets, and they homed the Sages, Boofbamians, and Mystearlians respectively. Similarly, these species are often called progenitor species.
It is never stated where the progenitors came from or how long they existed, but the events of their downfall is the catalyst of OSL's lore.
The species are covered in the following chapters in full detail, but their brief descriptions are as follows:
Sages
A species with a large world and vast population, focused on the beauty of all things to the point of narcissism and superiority.
Boofbamians
Shrouded in questions, Boofbamians were technologically advanced and thought to have segmented features.
Mystearlians
The first to wield and breathe magic, this demonic species relished in pleasure and sinfulness.
For most of their existence, the three progenitor species did not interact. It's unclear how aware they were of each other, but peace vanished with the crowning of Taltaylia. She was chosen as queen of the Sages for her beautiful, green eyes. They were a mutation, as Sages are known for having cyan-blue eyes.
Taltaylia was more than just pretty; she was greedy, cruel, and selfish. She birthed five princes, the eldest of whom inherited her emerald gaze. Sages bore a generational narcissism created by their superficial values, and Taltaylia's rule only exacerbated this.
It should be no surprise, then, that when a Boofbamian spaceship first touched down on the Sages' planet, conflict ensued.
Although the Boofbamians insisted they meant no harm and only arrived for research, the Sages seized the opportunity and captured their visitors. Through unsavory methods, information was forced out of Boofbamians until the Sages could replicate space travel. With superior numbers, it didn't take long for the Sages to adopt the Boofbamians' technology and take to the stars themselves.
Via this newfound reach, Sages witnessed the beauty of their neighboring worlds. They beheld mystical wonders on Mystearlia and fascinating materials on Boofbamia. Taltaylia ordered her people to pillage these worlds of anything deemed beautiful. This included but wasn't limited to: artworks, plant life, ores, delicacies, customs, musical styles, and even chunks of the natives' biology. For example, Mystearlian tongues were harvested for their vibrant hues.
Sages and Boofbamians soon enveloped themselves in war, unsurprisingly. Boofbamians, despite their high intellect and superior technology, could not stand up to the vast population of Sages. Those numbers were backed by a cunning queen, too.
Contrasting their lawless and vengeful nature, Mystearlians vied to stay out of the war. Unfortunately for them, they were dragged into it by whim of the Boofbamians who kidnapped many of them for experimentation. The hope was to utilize the magical demons in order to fight the Sages.
When that plan failed and resulted in a researcher being violently consumed, Boofbamians scrambled for advantage by investigating the massive dragon sighted in the cosmos between. They called it the Asqura.
Unaware of the Asqura's real name or his sentience, they approached him intending to harvest his indestructible scales. This, too, ended in disaster. The dragon retaliated by following the researchers back to Boofbamia and splitting it in half.
With one of the progenitor planets cut in two, even Sages knew better than to disturb the Asqura. They remained blissfully willing to plunder their other neighbors, of course.
Over time Boofbamians developed a self-piloted ship tasked with invading the Sages and spilling toxic fumes into their atmosphere. This weapon's name was never mentioned, and is referred to simply as "The Boofbamians' Machine". The gas which it deployed would poison its victims and dry them out so thoroughly that they essentially became statues. A truly horrific fate meant only for the Sages.
Boofbamians wanted to avoid the total genocide of their beauty-obsessed neighbors, but no longer saw a choice.
They also didn't see their fatal mistake.
The machine was said to have gone haywire and instead poisoned the entire early universe. All three progenitor planets and the Asqura fell victim to the deadly miasma. There were very few survivors. Children seemed to have a higher rate of survival, but the remaining adults struggled to find a course of action.
Finally, as the early universe began to perish, Mystearlians made their move. Using their esoteric sorcery and infernal power, they forced incomparable abilities upon Taltaylia's five surviving sons. This irony was vengeful, for Sages sought to conquer the early universe and now they would bear that burden. They did not beware their own wishes. Creation Magic was born from this act and forced upon the eldest Sage prince, Charles, as the cruelest punishment. It would be his doom to rebuild the universe that his mother destroyed.
With that, the progenitor species died out almost entirely. Charles, at the young age of thirteen, grappled with his sudden responsibility and created new planets that were not barren or poisoned. Much like the original three planets, each new world bears unique mystical energy which affects those conceived on the surface. In this way, a person's species is not determined by the race of their parents but by their place of conception.
Charles does not consciously decide the makeup of a world's magic. Even he doesn't know what sort of species will come out of each planet he creates. Nevertheless, he continued to weave worlds. The scarce survivors of the early universe migrated and repopulated, however their offspring did not share their species - what did live on was the magic of Mystearlians. It was passed on for generations to come. Magical genetics are discussed in a separate chapter.
Joined by his four brothers, Charles attempted to keep the peace as he expanded the universe to a far greater size than it had ever been. Yet, with each young star and every new galaxy he painted into the cosmos, a spark of uncertainty ignited within him and illuminated something far worse.
So it was that millennia later, turmoil clutched the universe once again...
The next chapters detail the progenitor species and their home worlds in far greater detail. Proceed to learn their cultures, biology, and secrets.
