Sharcanids

This species is most recognized by its extreme sexual dimorphism. Individuals born male have shark and raptor-like traits, and those born female feature doglike aspects. Hence the name Sharcanid (shark & canid). They come from planet Sharcandia. Their deity has not yet been revealed.

While mostly humanoid, Sharcanids' animalistic traits vary greatly between individuals. Some have tails, some don't. Many have the feet of their bestial half. A minor character in The Ruler's Rift was described as having the entire head of a shark.

Curiously, the species of their bestial half seems entirely random, or at least based on something other than ancestry. For example, Lucille Aash is a malamute Sharcanid but her mother is a husky Sharcanid. Additionally, the coloring of these animal traits doesn't necessarily mirror reality - Lucille, again, is a malamute Sharcanid yet her tail has crimson speckles.

This species isn't particularly magic-inclined, but can use it. They do have an exclusive ability, however, which is nearly as distinguishing as the aforementioned sexual dimorphism. This ability involves a Sharcanid offering their own scale(s) or fur to others, with which the recipient may use to 'call' the one who supplied it. In this way, Sharcanids are capable of lesser telepathy whether psychic or not. Still, these 'magical phone calls' are only one-way and a Sharcanid cannot initiate contact with those who possess their scale(s) or fur. As this can clearly be abused, Sharcanids are advised to be cautious with whom they give their 'fur number' to.

Cultural details of this odd species have not been a focal point of the novels, so little is known on that front. However Sharcandia is a very old planet; it has existed since the same era as Frostylia and remains populated even during present OSL. In fact, it is currently doing better than ever.

Its rocky history sees it falling in and out of poverty. The reasons aren't yet elaborated on, but it can be presumed that the world didn't see many visitors from other star systems and therefore lacked opportunities to expand. It's also possible that it was not in good standing during King Charles's rule and consequently was not often helped by neighboring deities. Perhaps the planet itself was a bit barren. Whatever the reason, trade and jobs were scarce.

Sharcandia saw relief during Violet Xavierras's rule - this is something many planets can't fathom saying for themselves. Sharcandia was deemed an "honest world" (presumably if less than half of the population is branded). To prosper this honest world, Violet established many connections to it and bestowed upon it gifts such as new resources and knowledge. She also sent various innovators to settle there, and even offered Sharcanids positions in her palace. One Sharcanid in particular climbed that ladder until he was among the queen's personal, royal guard.

Sharcandia's newfound reputation and networking allowed it to remain afloat even after Violet's death. To this day, many Sharcanids consider her a savior.
