Medical Magic

Healing spells are a subset of psychic magic focused on repairing wounds. Medical mages such as Jawavah are often well-versed in herbs and traditional medicines as well. Like all sorcery, healing draws on its user's feelings - it's said that medical magic can only be properly utilized by one with a compassionate heart. This may be why Violet was never proficient with it (even prior to her corruption) regardless of her magical expertise. Jawavah, on the other hand, was a kind man who fell into villainy due to grief and depression.

This magic's potential is vast - medical mages working under Celeste Superbia reconstructed Casper's head after he'd blown it off, from which he then recovered as if nothing happened. Not to mention they likely were unacquainted with his decentralized nervous system. Another example is Jawavah, who used arcane and surgical knowledge to design a potion that would grant longevity at the cost of reproduction. Though they are often pacifists, these mages are not to be trifled with.

Healing spells can patch up some truly gruesome injuries, however they cannot revive the dead. Similarly, very few diseases, poisons, spells, and parasites can be cured this way. Hence why medical mages place importance on studying traditional remedies in tandem. One does not replace the other.

Magic of the tonic variety does not discriminate except for against black magic. These two flavors of the arcane have a fitting interaction: healing is repelled by wrathful magic. The phenomenon is much like a person who does not want to be saved. This is almost never witnessed due to black magic's scarcity, but a dark mage is nearly impossible to heal unless they are put to sleep. A soul and its magic are far less vigorous in this state, allowing for medicinal spells to take effect despite the darkness. Even then, avid medics are required.

Self-sustained effects of black magic usage cannot be cured, even with the assistance of slumber. Heather Invidoak's sealed fate is an example of this. In addition, a haunting reality rests in the Liar's Brand - it's a permanent scar burned into its victim via black magic, therefore it slightly weakens healing cast upon the mark's bearer. Even liars who avoided slavery were doomed to some suffering.

Outside of these exceptions, healing is eagerly effective on the injured. It needs no input from its patient and can be upheld by multiple mages at once, which will increase its potency and speed.

Yet a tender personality and restful patient are not the only requirements to be a medical mage. As a psychic subcategory, healing is difficult to learn and takes copious energy. Spells must be maintained for extended periods of time to ensure a patient's survival, so endurance is critical especially if working alone.
