The smell of the train station's smoke lures into my nose as soon as I step thru the barrier that leads from the King's Cross station into the Platform 9¾. "Woah..." I quietly let out under my breath while watching the train before me. 'Hogwarts Express' There are so many people in here. All of the children are getting on board, ready for the new adventure ahead. Some of the parents are here as well. Waving, hugging and kissing their goodbyes. Watching all of this from aside gives me this exciting bubbling feeling inside. I'm so nervous for my first day! I inhale thru the nose with lip tight smile and turn to look over the shoulder:"Well, I better get going. I'll see yo..-", but no one's there. Both of my eyebrows raise:"Oh...". I could have sworn mom and dad were just behind me with aunty.
For a quick moment I shift my gaze between the barrier I just walked thru and the people beside the train. I wanna say goodbye to them before the leave. With that in mind, I try to walk back, but immediately more people walk thru the barrier and I'm forced to walk away from it. "Come on now! Move it, move it, move it!" one of the parents tells to their three kids as they all rush towards the train. The parent's orders carries into my ears, and like I have no control of my own body, I start going after them with haste. People keep shoving and walking past, like I'm not even there. "E-excuse me..- Sorry... I, uh..-" my voice drowns into the noise. Carrying the heavy luggage all by myself isn't an easy task either...
A train worker spots me right when they turn to face me, and basically pushes me inside, so I stumble a bit:"Come now, in you go.". "Oh..!" quickly, I get some support from the wall, but the luggage gets awkwardly stuck in the entry way. "For goodness sake..." the train worker sighs sharply and pushes the luggage in so it hits my legs. Panic raises in me and I gulp:"Sorry..! Sorry.". The door gets slammed close and worker blows to the whistle as a sign the train will be leaving soon. As I'm trying to get a good hold of the heavy suitcase - it pops open, and some of the things falls onto the floor. "Oh, no!" quickly start gathering the belongings back in there. Hopefully no one saw! I need to make good impression on the first day.
When I finally got everything in order, the train started moving. Little bit hesitant, I walk along the long and narrow aisle, looking for a carriage to join. But every single one seems full so far... People's glares whenever I open the slide door to peek in makes me feel quite small - specially if it happens to be the seventh years. Defeated, I keep on walking. I don't know anyone here. When all of sudden, a group of boys runs in from behind. "Quickly! Lets get in the front!" one of them yells to his friends. There are three of them. All running so fast, not caring the few people who are still walking along the aisle, so I press myself against the wall and let them go past. None of them even looks at my way as the just whooshes right past. Hm, they looked like they could be in second year.
Just when they have ran few meters ahead, I lean away from the wall - ready to continue to look for a seat, someone bumps into me and I almost fall:"Ah..! Sorry..-!". My head snaps to look over the shoulder, only to see a chubby boy, who looks a bit surprised we collapsed. "Pete! C'mon!" a voice from further away calls, and the boy continues to run after his friends, looking slightly embarrassed. For a moment, I stare after them. Wonder if there are any empty seats where they are heading? Just then, one of the most gentle voice speaks:"You can sit with us.". "Huh?" my whole body turns towards the voice. There is a red haired girl standing at the slide door near me. The girl smiles:"What's your name?". She looks a bit older than me. "(Y/N)." I simply reply, little bit stunned by her kindness. She nods, then opens the slide door more:"Come on in. There's plenty of room in here.". "Thank you." my voice goes smaller and I enter the carriage.
Immediately when I enter the small space, I notice there's a boy sitting next to the window. He has raven dark hair and pale skin. Wearing all black, head to toe. And... He doesn't look too happy while sitting there. Nor angry. Just... Bored? I guess. "This is (Y/N). (Y/N), this is Severus." the girl introduces. "Hi." I give him a tiny wave with shy smile. "Hello." the boy simply reply and shift his gaze away from me to look outside of the window. Did I do something wrong? Can't help, but feel like this person doesn't really like me already - or anyone that matter. But I quickly brush that off and go sit opposite of him. Maybe he's just shy. The ginger haired girl's smile has never faded away, and she comes to sit next to me:"I'm Lily - Lily Evans. You look new. Are you a first year?". "Y-yes. I am. I... Uh, this is my first time going Hogwarts. Heh." I babble and try to keep the smile. Nice going, (Y/N). No wonder you got no friends. Lily gives an understanding gaze and continues:"Severus and I are starting our second school year. And I cannot wait to finally play Quidditch!". "Hm." the boy let out a quiet, yet sharp scoff without taking his dark eyes off the window. He doesn't seem to like Quidditch then.
The train travel goes on for an hour, until a friendly looking old woman pop their head thru the slide door - asking if any of us wants to buy any sweets from her cart. The cart has multiple sweets and treats, it's almost blinding. My parents don't let me have many sweets, but... They are not here now. With Lily's encouragement, I bought a chocolate frog and a bag of some sour candies. Lily bought herself some liquorice and all kinds of other sweets I secretly wished to try on, but kept munching happily what I got. "You know which House you're going to get sorted into?" Lily suddenly ask. I quickly swallow what I got in my mouth before answering:"My aunt told I might get sorted in Ravenclaw..-", "Ooh, so that means you're smart one!" her eyes sparkle amazed.
Only now the boy opposite us shift his eyes on me from the book that he has been reading few minutes. Like he's trying to see if I actually look as smart to be a Ravenclaw. I shrug, feeling a bit awkward about the attention I just got:"I... I don't know. I guess?". I am pretty good at puzzles and riddles, if I may say so. The truth is, I'm most likely going to be sorted into Slytherin. Just like my parents, grandparents, their parents etc. Thru out generation, us (Y/L)'s has been sorted into Slytherin. There are only a few Ravenclaws and Gryffindors in the family, but... My parents don't talk about them much. Guess they don't like the blue or the red color. "I'm a Gryffindor! And Severus here is a Slytherin." Lily's cheerful voice interrupts my thoughts and my focus goes to Severus, who still has those dark eyes on me. Studying my every move. That's odd. My parents told me there is no way Gryffindors and Slytherins can be friends. But... Looks like they got it wrong?
The sour candy bag rustles on my lap as I shift my balance a bit, and Severus's eyes makes a quick visit on the small bag. Hm? That's when I realize, he doesn't have anything to eat with him. Not even a sandwich. The train travel will last several hours, so I can only imagine how hungry he must feel. Knowing how awful it feels to have an empty stomach, I cannot help but feel the urge to help him a bit. Warm smile raises upon my face and I extend my arm towards him with the bag in my hand:"Here. You can have it. It's not much, but at least it's better than nothing.". Severus looks a bit taken aback by the offer, but keeps the same composure he has had this entire time:"No, thank you.". Hm, guess... He doesn't like sweets either.
"Severus doesn't like any sweets or spicy things. He only eats bland food." the girl next to me giggles. My head turns to her:"Oh?". "No, I don't!" the boy snap back, almost like he's embarrassed about getting called out like that. Right when he opened his mouth, my focus goes back to him. Now I'm little bit taken aback myself. This is the furthest of a emotion I have seen on him. "Oh, come on. Just teasing ya." Lily again giggles. Severus folds arms on his chest and again looks out of the window. My eyes visits on the bag that I place back on my lap, and shift the gaze to the window next to us. It has started raining quite hard. Then I guess he wouldn't like to share the sandwich my aunt made me for lunch either. She likes to add some spicy mayo in them.
