Distractions

The morning after Arnav’s departure dawned with an unusual silence in the Raizada mansion. The air felt heavy, as if the house itself was mourning the absence of one of its own. The usual morning hustle was muted, and even the sunlight filtering through the windows seemed softer, less vibrant.

Anjali sat quietly at the dining table, her tea growing cold in front of her. The events of the previous night weighed on her, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that something important had been left unresolved. She sighed, glancing up as Siya walked into the room, her usual bubbly energy noticeably absent.

“Siya,” Anjali called softly, her voice full of concern.

Siya looked up, her eyes dull. “Yes, Di?”

Anjali hesitated for a moment before speaking. “I was thinking… maybe you could spend the day with Karan. Go out, do some shopping, have some fun. It might take your mind off things.”

Siya’s face brightened slightly at the mention of Karan. He had always been good at cheering her up, and the idea of a distraction was appealing. “Do you think he’ll be free?”

Anjali smiled and nodded. “I already spoke to him. He’ll be here in a bit to pick you up.”

Just then, the doorbell rang, and Karan’s familiar voice echoed through the hall as he greeted the staff at the door. Siya’s mood lifted a little more, and she hurried to the door to meet him.

“Good morning, Karan!” Siya greeted him with a small smile, trying to muster some enthusiasm.

“Morning, Siya!” Karan replied with his usual easygoing grin. He took one look at her and tilted his head. “Someone looks like they need a day of fun and shopping.”

Siya nodded, trying to shake off the lingering sadness. “I think that’s exactly what I need.”

“Well, lucky for you, I’m the best shopping buddy in town,” Karan said with a wink. “Come on, let’s get out of here and make a day of it.”

They spent the day wandering through Delhi’s bustling markets and high-end boutiques, filling their shopping bags with clothes, shoes, and accessories. Karan made it his mission to keep Siya laughing, cracking jokes and telling funny stories to distract her from the thoughts that had been weighing her down.

Over lunch at a cozy café, Karan finally broached the subject that had been on both of their minds. “Siya,” he began carefully, “I know you’re upset about Arnav leaving… but maybe he had his own reasons. You know how he is—he doesn’t always share what he’s thinking.”

Siya sighed, poking at her food with her fork. “I just don’t understand why he couldn’t stay. We’ve always been so close, and now it feels like he’s just… slipping away.”

Karan reached across the table and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. “I get it. But maybe the best way to support him is to trust that he knows what he’s doing. He’ll come back when he’s ready.”

Siya nodded slowly, taking in Karan’s words. “I know you’re right, Karan. It’s just hard.”

Karan smiled warmly. “That’s what friends are for, right? To help you through the hard stuff.”

Siya returned his smile, feeling a little lighter. “Thanks, Karan. I really needed this today.”

Meanwhile, at the Gupta house, Aditi and Khushi were busy in the kitchen, preparing Nandini’s favorite sweets. The kitchen was filled with the delicious aroma of ghee and sugar, and the sisters chatted as they worked, trying to keep their minds occupied.

“I think Badi Maa could use some cheering up,” Aditi said as she stirred a pot on the stove. “She must be feeling sad with Arnav leaving so suddenly.”
