The night of the engagement ceremony arrived with a festive air that hung over both the Gupta and Raizada houses. The once-quiet streets were now filled with the soft glow of lights and the sounds of celebration. Each house was adorned with strings of fairy lights, marigold garlands, and colorful lanterns, transforming the neighborhood into a scene straight out of a fairy tale.
At the Gupta mansion, preparations were in full swing. The entire house was abuzz with activity as guests began to arrive, their laughter and chatter filling the air. The living room was transformed into a lavish venue, with silk drapes, floral arrangements, and shimmering lights setting the stage for the evening’s celebrations.
Downstairs, Khushi made her entrance, descending the grand staircase with a grace that caught the attention of everyone in the room. She was dressed in a stunning blue lehenga that shimmered with every step, the intricate embroidery catching the light. Her long black hair was left open, cascading down her back in soft curls, and her makeup was flawless, highlighting her natural beauty.
Khushi’s father, Rajesh, was already in the thick of things, ensuring that everything was in place. He moved through the crowd with practiced ease, greeting guests and checking on the arrangements. Despite the chaos, he exuded a calm authority, his years of experience in hosting grand events shining through.
Nearby, Daadi was also mingling with the guests, her warm smile and gentle demeanor making everyone feel welcome. She wore a deep red saree that complemented her dignified presence, and her laughter echoed through the room as she engaged in conversation with family friends.
Karan was stationed near the catering area, his sharp eyes scanning the setup to ensure everything was perfect. He was in his element, directing the staff with a light-hearted banter that kept the mood lively. His playful nature was evident in the way he interacted with everyone, but there was no mistaking the care he took to make sure everything was just right.
As the Raizada family arrived, the energy in the room shifted. Nandini, dressed in an elegant maroon saree, led the way, holding a beautifully wrapped gift in her hands. Devendra followed closely behind, carrying another box with a proud smile on his face. Anjali and Siya walked in together, Siya’s spirits visibly lifted after her day out with Karan, and Arjun brought up the rear, his gaze searching the room until it landed on Aditi.
Aditi, who had been making her way down the stairs in a breathtaking silver lehenga, paused as she caught Arjun’s eye. The world seemed to fade away for a moment as they exchanged shy glances, the love between them clear for all to see. The silver of Aditi’s lehenga matched perfectly with the sparkling jewelry she wore, and the soft waves of her hair framed her face in a way that made her look every bit the bride she was soon to be.
Just as the Raizadas began to greet the Guptas, someone else stepped into the room, standing quietly behind the family. It was Karan who noticed him first, his eyes widening in surprise as he took in the sight of the person standing there.
“Arnav!” Karan exclaimed, drawing everyone’s attention. “You’re back! I knew you wouldn’t miss your brother’s engagement.”
The room fell silent as all eyes turned to Arnav, who had indeed returned, much to the surprise of everyone present. He was dressed in a simple yet elegant black sherwani, his presence commanding yet understated. There was a moment of stunned silence before smiles broke out across the room, the tension from earlier forgotten in the joy of his unexpected return.
Khushi, who had been quietly observing the scene from the sidelines, felt her heart skip a beat. She had convinced herself that Arnav was gone for good, that whatever connection they might have had was severed the moment he left. And yet, here he was, standing before her, as if the universe had decided to play one last trick on her.
She quickly averted her gaze, determined not to let herself get drawn back in. She had made a promise to herself, and she intended to keep it. Arnav, however, couldn’t help but glance in her direction, his eyes searching for hers, but finding only her determined indifference.
Just then, the ceremony was about to begin, and the focus shifted back to Aditi and Arjun. The couple was led to the stage, where they exchanged smiles and shy glances, their love story taking center stage as the families gathered around them.
Before the ceremony could start, Daadi gently touched Khushi’s arm. “Beta, could you fetch the flowers from the pool area? We’ll need them for the rituals.”
Khushi nodded, grateful for the distraction. “Of course, Daadi. I’ll be right back.”
She made her way through the crowd and out to the pool area, where the cool night air offered a brief respite from the warmth and noise inside. The flowers were set on a table near the water, their vibrant colors reflecting in the still surface of the pool.
As Khushi reached for the flowers, she heard a familiar voice behind her, its tone both teasing and accusatory. “You didn’t say hi again!”
Startled, Khushi’s hand slipped, and she lost her balance. She let out a small gasp as she began to fall, but before she could hit the ground, strong arms caught her, pulling her back to safety.
Arnav had appeared out of nowhere, his hands steadying her as she regained her footing. Flower petals that had been disturbed in the process fluttered down around them, creating a moment that felt almost surreal.
For a brief moment, the world around them seemed to fade away as they stood there by the pool, flower petals gently falling like confetti. Khushi looked up at Arnav, her breath catching as their eyes met, the intensity in his gaze sending a shiver down her spine.
The silence between them was filled with unspoken words, emotions that neither of them could quite articulate. It was as if the universe had conspired to bring them together in this moment, leaving them both unsure of what to do next.
And just as suddenly as the moment had begun, it was over. The sounds of the celebration inside the house broke through the bubble that had formed around them, and Khushi quickly stepped back, her cheeks flushed as she tried to gather her composure.
Arnav released her, his expression a mix of concern and something else—something that made Khushi’s heart race even faster. But before either of them could speak, the sound of someone approaching brought them back to reality.
They both turned to see a maid coming toward them, her eyes widening slightly as she took in the scene. “Khushi didi, the ceremony is about to start. They’re waiting for the flowers.”
Khushi nodded quickly, grabbing the flowers from the table. “I’ll bring them right away.”
Without another word, she hurried past Arnav and back into the house, her mind a whirlwind of emotions she wasn’t ready to face.
As she re-entered the house, Arnav stood by the pool, watching her go, a conflicted expression on his face. There was so much he wanted to say, so much he needed to explain, but he wasn’t sure where to begin. And with the engagement ceremony about to start, there was no time for it now.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair as he turned to follow her back inside. There would be time to talk later—he would make sure of it.
For now, the evening belonged to Aditi and Arjun, and he wasn’t going to let anything ruin their special night.
But as he stepped back into the warmth and light of the house, Arnav couldn’t help but wonder if the universe had something else in store for him and Khushi—something that neither of them could have predicted.
