Before either of them could say anything more, there was a knock at the door, followed by the arrival of Nakul, one of the senior pediatricians who had joined the center.
“Good morning!” Nakul greeted them cheerfully, unaware that he had interrupted a private moment. “Ready for the big day?”
Arnav straightened up, though his hand remained lightly on Khushi’s back, a reassuring presence. “We are,” he replied, his voice returning to its usual confident tone. “Let’s get started.”
The staff meeting went smoothly, with Khushi and Arnav leading the discussions and laying out the vision for the center. The team was enthusiastic, eager to begin their work and make a difference in the lives of the children who would come through their doors. Khushi felt a sense of satisfaction as the meeting wrapped up, knowing that they were on the right path.
As the staff dispersed, Khushi and Arnav found themselves alone in the room once again. Arnav turned to her, his expression serious. “Khushi, I wanted to ask you something.”
Khushi looked up at him, curiosity piqued. “What is it?”
“I’ve been thinking about our future,” Arnav began, his tone thoughtful. “Now that we’re working together and building this center, I want to make sure we’re on the same page about everything.”
Khushi nodded, sensing the importance of what he was about to say. “Of course, Arnav. What’s on your mind?”
Arnav took a deep breath, his eyes locking with hers. “I want to make sure that nothing comes between us—neither work nor any outside influences. We’ve been through so much already, and I don’t want to lose what we have.”
Khushi felt a rush of emotion at his words. “You won’t lose me, Arnav. We’re in this together.”
“I know,” Arnav replied, his voice softening. “But I’ve seen how easily things can get complicated. I just want to protect what we have.”
Khushi reached out, taking his hand in hers. “Arnav, I understand. But I believe that as long as we communicate and support each other, we can handle anything that comes our way.”
Arnav squeezed her hand, a small smile playing on his lips. “You’re right, as always.”
Khushi returned his smile, feeling a sense of peace settle over her. She knew that their journey together was just beginning and that there would be challenges ahead. But in that moment, she felt confident that they could face anything as long as they were together.
The rest of the day passed in a blur of activity as Khushi and Arnav settled into their new roles at the center. There were meetings with department heads, tours of the facilities, and introductions to the staff. By the time evening rolled around, Khushi was exhausted but content, knowing that they had made significant progress.
As she gathered her things to head home, Khushi felt a familiar warmth settle over her as Arnav appeared by her side. “Heading home?” he asked, his tone casual but with an undertone of something more.
Khushi nodded, a smile tugging at her lips. “Yes, it’s been a long day. I’m looking forward to some rest.”
Arnav’s expression softened, and he reached out to take her hand. “I’ll walk you out.”
They left the center together, stepping out into the cool evening air. The street between their homes was quiet, the day’s hustle and bustle giving way to the calm of night. As they reached the point where they would part ways, Arnav turned to her, his hand still holding hers.
“I’m proud of you, Khushi,” he said softly. “Today was a success because of you.”
Khushi felt a flush of warmth at his words. “We did it together, Arnav. I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Arnav’s gaze softened, and for a moment, Khushi thought he might kiss her right there on the street. But instead, he simply squeezed her hand and smiled. “Get some rest, Khushi. We have another big day tomorrow.”
Khushi nodded, feeling a mix of contentment and longing as she watched him walk across the street to his home. As she entered her own house, she couldn’t help but reflect on how far they had come. The challenges, the misunderstandings, the growing closeness—it had all led them to this point, and she was ready to face whatever the future held, as long as Arnav was by her side.
Later that night, as Khushi lay in bed, her mind drifted to the moments they had shared that day—the quiet conversations, the shared smiles, the unspoken understanding between them. She knew that the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but with Arnav, she felt ready to take on anything.
As sleep finally claimed her, Khushi’s last thought was of Arnav, his hand in hers, and the promise of the life they were building together.
