Grandma.

It's weird to miss someone
Before they're really gone.
Except you are gone,
You have been for about 6 years now.

I have a picture of you,
Of us,
On my kitchen table.
It's got zig-zag edges,
Likely cut by your old scrapbooking scissors,
And we're standing there,
In you and grandpa's house,
In front of the fire place
Where your Zumba weights use to sit.
We're doing a silly pose,
I'm wearing my favorite shirt,
And we both have our curlers in.

I miss you,
As you were.

That was before you left grandpa.
That was before you left home.

That was before.
When we used to pick peaches on the 4th
And decorate Christmas trees in the field.
When you had hobbies.
When you loved the Chiefs,
And the treadmill,
And you attended church every Sunday morning
With the other old ladies.
You went to Zumba,
And you stayed busy.
When you wrote terrible poems
And read them to us so proudly.
When you adored grandpa
And talked about him fondly
That was before,
When you used to take us to dinosaur dinner
And walk around the mall with us.
Back when you still smiled
As you did
And there was a light
Behind your eyes.

I miss that grandma.

I miss the grandma you were
Before you left.

It's weird to miss someone
Who's long gone,
But still here.

I wonder, when it's time for your funeral,
If we'll share memories
Of who you were,
Or of who you died being.
