The moment Alex and Lizzie stepped out of the doctor's office, a mix of emotions overwhelmed them. Alex's arm was around Lizzie's shoulder, and they walked closely together as if the news they had just received was still sinking in. Lizzie couldn't help but laugh nervously, her hand resting on her belly as if the mere thought of it was surreal.

"Are you sure? I mean, I thought I was just run down from the holidays," Lizzie said, still trying to wrap her head around the fact that they were expecting. "This whole thing just... it doesn't feel real."

Alex chuckled softly, his eyes gleaming with disbelief. "I know, right? You were convinced it was just stress, but apparently, we’re going to be parents." He paused, his hand gently touching her back. "It’s just... wow. I didn't expect this at all."

"Neither did I," Lizzie admitted. "I mean, after everything with my cancer, I didn’t even think we’d get this far, let alone... this."

The words hung in the air, both of them still processing what was happening. For so long, Lizzie had been consumed by the fear of her cancer returning, and now there was an entirely new chapter unfolding before them.

"We’re going to be okay, right?" Lizzie asked, her voice shaking just a little. "We’re ready for this?"

Alex looked down at her with so much love and certainty in his eyes. "We’re going to be amazing parents. You’ve got the strength of a warrior, and I’ve got your back every step of the way. This little one is going to be so lucky."

Lizzie smiled through her tears, her heart swelling with gratitude. "I’m scared, Alex," she whispered, her hands instinctively cupping her belly. "But I’m also excited. We’re going to do this. Together."

Later that evening, back at their apartment, the two of them sat in the living room, still trying to digest the news. They’d called their families, shared the happy news, and received a flood of congratulations. But still, the weight of the reality of becoming parents was settling in.

As they sat there, Lizzie couldn’t help but marvel at the thought of what was to come. There was so much uncertainty about the future, but in this moment, with Alex beside her, she felt more hopeful than ever.

"So," Alex said, breaking the silence as he leaned back on the couch, "now that we know we’re going to be parents, what’s next?"

Lizzie looked at him, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "Well, for one thing, we’re going to have to figure out how to keep up with a little one. But we’re also going to have to learn to change our lives in ways we never expected. But, hey, at least we’re doing it together, right?"

Alex laughed softly, squeezing her hand. "Absolutely. And let’s face it, we’ve got this. We’ve faced worse and come out stronger, and now we’re about to welcome a tiny little person into our lives. This is just the next adventure."

Lizzie nodded, leaning her head against his shoulder, the weight of everything feeling lighter now. She knew they had a long road ahead of them—one filled with sleepless nights, challenges, and moments of doubt—but she also knew that with Alex by her side, they could face anything.

“Plus,” Alex added with a grin, “I think we’re going to make the best parents. I mean, look at us. We’re both ridiculously good-looking. This baby’s going to be gorgeous.”

Lizzie rolled her eyes with a laugh, nudging him playfully. "Oh, really? And here I thought our kid might take after me."

Alex gave her a mischievous smile. “Well, we all know the baby’s going to be a perfect mix of both of us. And I have no doubt they’ll have your brains, Lizzie.”

She smiled softly, feeling a sense of peace that had been missing for so long. She didn’t know exactly what the future held, but she knew one thing for certain: She wasn’t facing it alone. And together, she and Alex would be the parents their child needed.

As the evening wore on, Lizzie and Alex spent the rest of the night discussing their plans for the future—baby names, their new home, and what their lives would look like with a little one. Their excitement was infectious, and even though there was a lot of uncertainty, one thing was crystal clear: They were ready to take on this next chapter, side by side.

And just like that, the weight of their fears began to lift, replaced by the joy of a new life, a new beginning, and the promise of an adventure unlike any other.

As the evening wore on and they continued to revel in the news of their impending parenthood, Lizzie and Alex found themselves talking about the upcoming ice skating trip. The holiday cheer was starting to set in, and it seemed like everyone was getting into the festive spirit.

“You know,” Lizzie said with a small laugh, her mind drifting to the plans that had been set in motion for their Christmas party and the double date ice skating trip, “I’m kind of looking forward to ice skating. But I have a feeling that Lexie and Callie are going to be running circles around us on the ice.”

Alex snorted at the thought, grinning widely. “Oh, absolutely. I can already picture it. You know Callie is a pro when it comes to sports, and Lexie... well, I’m pretty sure she’s part ice skater in her spare time.” He shook his head in disbelief. “We’re going to be the ones trying to keep up with them.”

Lizzie smiled at the thought of her friend skating circles around them, practically gliding across the ice like she was born for it. “I’m not even going to try to keep up. I’ll be lucky if I don’t break an ankle,” she joked, rubbing her belly. “I feel like I’m already balancing enough things as it is. But hey, I’ll make sure to hold on to Alex’s arm so I don’t fall flat on my face.”

“You won’t fall,” Alex reassured her with a grin. “And if you do, I’ve got you. But you’re right about Lexie and Callie. Those two will probably be showing off and making us look bad.”

Lizzie raised an eyebrow and smirked. “You think they’ll be showing off? Just wait until Derek and Mark get on the ice. They’ll be doing some ridiculous moves trying to outdo each other.”

“Please,” Alex said with a sarcastic laugh. “Derek’s probably going to try some fancy figure skating routine, and Mark’s going to try and make it look like he’s a professional hockey player or something. It’ll be a competition for who can look the most ridiculous on the ice.”

Lizzie chuckled at the image in her head. "Honestly, I can't wait to see it. It’ll be like one big mess of us trying to stay upright while Callie and Lexie glide around like it’s no big deal."

Alex’s face softened as he glanced over at Lizzie, his expression full of warmth and love. "Yeah, but we’ll be having fun, right? And that's what matters. As long as we’re all together, I think it’s going to be a great time."

Lizzie nodded, her smile widening. "Definitely. I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to something so much. The holidays, everyone being together... And now we’re going to be parents." She sighed, feeling a little overwhelmed by everything, but in the best way possible. "I can't wait to introduce our little one to this family."

Alex squeezed her hand gently. "They're going to be loved beyond measure, Lizzie. And that’s all that matters."

With their plans for the ice skating trip and the Christmas party ahead of them, they spent the rest of the night looking over the list of things they needed to prepare, from baby essentials to making sure everyone was ready for a night of fun. Lizzie couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement building in her chest.

As she and Alex continued talking, planning, and laughing together, she realized that, despite all the uncertainty about what was to come, this was exactly where she was supposed to be—surrounded by the people who loved her and ready to face whatever came their way. The ice skating would just be the icing on the cake.
