As Lexie cradled Sofia, she decided that her vows would remain a secret until the big day. She wanted the words to surprise Mark, to be a heartfelt moment shared only when they stood before everyone, ready to start the next chapter of their lives. Mark didn’t press her about it; he seemed content knowing she was working on them, trusting her completely.
Their peaceful morning was interrupted when both of their phones buzzed simultaneously on the counter. Lexie frowned as she set Sofia down in her playpen and walked over to check her phone. It was a page from the hospital, summoning them to an emergency faculty meeting.
Mark read his message and let out a sigh. “Guess we’re not getting a day off after all.”
Lexie groaned, glancing at Meredith. “Looks like we’re needed. Something about Owen and what’s going to happen next.”
Meredith’s expression darkened, and she nodded. “They’ve been hinting at this meeting all week. It’s for everyone who was directly affected by the crash.”
Mark clenched his jaw, his mood immediately souring. “Let’s get this over with,” he muttered, grabbing his jacket.
At the hospital, the tension in the conference room was palpable. Everyone who had been involved in the plane crash was there—Meredith, Derek, Callie, Arizona, Lexie, Mark, and Cristina. Richard Webber stood at the front of the room, looking somber as he waited for everyone to settle.
Mark’s eyes scanned the room, his jaw tight as he avoided looking at the empty chair where Owen would have sat. Memories of the crash resurfaced unbidden: the sound of metal twisting, Lexie trapped beneath the wreckage, her fear-filled eyes as he tried desperately to save her. His fists clenched at his sides as he sat down, muttering under his breath.
Lexie placed a gentle hand on his arm, grounding him. “Mark,” she whispered softly, her voice full of understanding. He glanced at her, his anger softening slightly as he nodded.
Richard began the meeting, his tone serious. “First of all, I want to thank everyone for coming. I know this is a difficult topic, but it’s one we need to address. Dr. Hunt has been arrested and is currently awaiting trial for his actions leading up to the crash.”
There was a ripple of murmurs throughout the room, and Arizona shook her head in disbelief. “I still can’t wrap my head around it,” she muttered. “He knew. He knew, and he let us get on that plane.”
Callie placed a comforting hand on Arizona’s shoulder, though her own expression was tight with anger. “We all feel betrayed.”
Richard continued, “I’ve spoken with the board, and they’re taking this matter very seriously. Owen will no longer be employed by this hospital, and we’re reviewing policies to ensure nothing like this ever happens again. For now, I want to focus on how we move forward as a team.”
Cristina, who had been silent up until now, finally spoke, her voice icy. “How do you expect us to move forward? He betrayed us, Richard. He put us on that plane knowing what could happen. And we’re supposed to just... heal?”
Richard’s gaze softened. “I don’t expect you to forgive or forget, Cristina. I know this is going to take time. But I want to make sure you all have the support you need—counseling, time off, whatever it takes.”
Mark couldn’t stay silent any longer. “Support?” he spat, his voice low and furious. “You think a few therapy sessions are going to fix this? I almost lost her.” He gestured to Lexie, his voice cracking slightly. “We all almost lost each other. And it’s because of him.”
The room fell silent as Mark’s words hung in the air. Lexie reached for his hand, squeezing it tightly, but her own eyes glistened with unshed tears. “Mark,” she whispered, her voice soft and steady, “I’m here. We’re all here.”
