Khai’s POV

The faint glow of the afternoon sun filtered through the curtains of the safehouse living room. Rain sat beside me, her fingers idly tracing patterns on the armrest of the couch. Her presence was comforting, even if my mind couldn’t piece together why. There was a pull between us—something unspoken, something my heart seemed to recognize even though my memories refused to surface.

“Rain?” I asked hesitantly, my voice breaking the silence. She turned to me, her eyes warm but tinged with a sadness she tried to hide.

“Yes?”

I hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath. “What was it like? When we were… together?”

Her expression shifted, a flicker of surprise followed by something softer—fondness, perhaps. She looked down for a moment, as though gathering her thoughts, and when she met my gaze again, her lips curved into a small smile.

“I used to call you ‘Captain Hero,’” she said, her voice carrying a mix of affection and amusement.

I tilted my head, curious. “Why?”

Her smile widened, and a light laugh escaped her lips. “Because you completely ruined my undercover mission. I was trying to catch Therese’s cheating boyfriend red-handed. I had everything planned out—disguise, a perfect fake accent, the works. I was in character, flirting with the bastard to get him to make his move. Then, out of nowhere, you showed up.”

Rain paused, her laughter softening into a fond chuckle. “You stormed in, glared at him like he’d committed a mortal sin, and punched him square in the face. Followed up with a textbook jawbreaker for good measure.”

I blinked, stunned. “Wait, what?”

“You were furious,” she continued, a glimmer of nostalgia lighting her eyes. “You thought he was hitting on me. I guess you didn’t realize it was part of my plan. And then you looked at me with this triumphant grin, like you’d just saved the day.”

Despite the gap in my memories, I felt a flicker of warmth at her story. “So… I ruined your mission?”

“Oh, completely,” Rain said, laughing softly. “But it worked out in the end. The guy confessed everything to Therese the next day. And she thanked you for breaking his nose.”

I couldn’t help but smirk. “I sound like a hotheaded idiot.”

Rain shook her head, her smile softening. “You were… you. Fierce, loyal, protective. You always had this way of charging in, no matter what. And somehow, you always made me feel safe.”

Her words stirred something deep within me—an ache, a yearning I couldn’t explain. “I wish I could remember,” I murmured.

Rain’s smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of sadness. “I wish you could, too.”

She reached for my hand, her fingers brushing against mine. It felt natural, like they belonged there, even if my mind didn’t fully understand why.

“But even if your mind forgets,” she said softly, “I believe your heart remembers. Somewhere in there, Khai, the memories are still alive. And I’ll be here, helping you find them.”

Her words settled over me like a warm blanket, soothing the emptiness inside. Maybe she was right. Maybe the memories were still there, waiting to resurface. And as I looked into her eyes, I felt a glimmer of something familiar—a connection, a spark that couldn’t be erased by time or tragedy.

“Captain Hero, huh?” I said, breaking the silence.

Rain laughed, the sound filling the room like sunlight. “You’ll always be my Captain Hero.”
