Rain's POVThe faint glow of the moon seeped through the curtains, casting soft light over the room. It was 4:15 AM when I woke up with a strange uneasiness. My ear was ringing, a sharp tingling sensation that sent shivers down my spine. A throbbing headache followed, relentless and gnawing.
I turned to look at Khai. She was sleeping so peacefully, her face softened by dreams. I didn't want to disturb her. Watching her like this reminded me of all the quiet moments we used to share before everything became so complicated.
Quietly, I slipped out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. The cold tiles against my feet helped distract me from the pain, but only slightly. I rummaged through the medicine cabinet, found some pain relievers, and swallowed them with a few sips of water.
But the pain didn't ease. It grew sharper, as if needles were piercing the side of my head. My hands trembled, and I felt a wave of dizziness. I sat down on the cold floor, clutching my head, waiting-hoping-for this moment to pass.
The minutes felt like hours. My breath was shallow, and my heart raced as if it knew something I didn't. I closed my eyes, leaning against the wall, trying to focus on the sounds around me: the faint hum of the air conditioner, the ticking of the clock in the distance, and Khai's steady breathing from the bedroom.
I didn't want to alarm her, but the fear was creeping in. Was this just another episode, or was my condition worsening again?
The pain subsided slightly, enough for me to take a deep breath. Slowly, I opened my eyes and wiped away the sweat beading on my forehead. I reached for my phone and opened my notes, a habit I'd developed to track these episodes.
4:15 AM - Woke up with severe ear tingling and headache. Took pain relievers. Episode lasted 15 minutes.
As I typed, a tear slid down my cheek. It wasn't the pain that scared me; it was the uncertainty. How much longer could I keep this from Khai? From everyone?
I sat there for a few more minutes, letting the cool tiles ground me. When I finally felt steady enough, I stood up, splashed water on my face, and looked at my reflection in the mirror. My eyes were tired, and the shadows beneath them seemed darker than usual.
"You've got this, Rain," I whispered to myself. "Just a little longer."
I turned off the bathroom light and tiptoed back to bed. Sliding under the covers, I felt Khai stir slightly. She turned toward me, her arm draping over my waist instinctively.
"Rain..." she mumbled, her voice heavy with sleep.
"I'm here," I whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
She sighed softly and settled back into sleep, her presence grounding me in a way nothing else could.
I lay there, staring at the ceiling, my mind racing with thoughts of the future. How much more could I handle before everything came crashing down?
But for now, I held onto the one thing I could: this moment. With Khai by my side, I felt like I could face anything. Even if the morning light brought new challenges, at least I wouldn't have to face them alone.
