Khai had always believed she was part of the family, part of the legacy, but in the end, she was just a pawn in a twisted game-a game Lucan had been orchestrating all along. He had manipulated everyone around him, everyone who trusted him, and made them believe that Khai was his daughter. The perfect lie, the perfect illusion. And, to my horror, only a few people knew the truth: Mrs. Letty, Lia, Victoria... and Lucan himself.
Mrs. Letty had known all along. She'd been playing both sides, working with Lia, and using Khai as leverage to destroy the Stantons. Lia, with her manipulation and power, had made it her life's mission to exact revenge for her family. And Khai-Khai had been caught in the middle, not realizing that she was a victim of a legacy built on lies and manipulation.
Everything made sense now. The way Lia had targeted Khai, the way she had been so hell-bent on destroying her-it wasn't just about revenge for what had happened to her family. No, it was deeper than that. It was about exposing the truth, about revealing the falsehoods Lucan had built his life on.
I felt a surge of anger rise within me. Khai had suffered enough. All her life, she'd believed in a family that never truly existed for her. A family built on deceit. And now, she was paying the price for it. But the worst part? I never saw it coming. I had been so wrapped up in the chaos of it all, so focused on the present, that I failed to see the threads of the past weaving their way into our lives.
But I understood now. Everything. Every move. Every moment. It was all part of the plan-Lia's plan. And I wasn't going to let her win. Not without a fight.
I scrambled through the papers, my mind racing, adrenaline pumping through my veins. Time was running out-Mrs. Letty could be back any moment, and I needed to find something, anything, that could help locate Rain. My hands shook as I flipped through the stacks of documents, each paper more suffocating than the last.
And then, amidst the chaos, I found it.
A property title-5684 Water Valley Landing, MS 38620.
It had to be it. I couldn't think of anything else, couldn't question it-this was the lead.
I snapped a picture of the document, making sure the address was clear, before tucking my phone into my pocket. I had to get out of there, fast. I didn't look back, knowing Mrs. Letty was too close for comfort. I bolted out of the house, heading straight for my apartment.
My heart was pounding by the time I reached the door, and with a breath of relief, I swung it open, finding Kroft waiting.
"Kroft," I said breathlessly, my voice sharp with urgency. "I think I know where Rain is."
••••
Kroft nodded, grabbing his phone quickly. There was no time to waste. As he dialed Khai, I grabbed my own phone, my fingers trembling but steady as I quickly typed out the message. I knew the urgency in my words would speak louder than anything else. This could be our only shot at finding Rain.
I hit send, watching the message disappear into the void, hoping Khai would get it in time. I texted:
"Khai, go to this address, this is where they are hiding Rain: 5684 Water Valley Landing, MS 38620. We are headed towards this address, and if I can't respond back, that means I'm not on my phone. I'll leave my phone in Kroft's car and turn on my GPS. Please hurry."
The weight of the situation hit me like a wave, but I couldn't falter. Not now. We were too close.
"Let's go," I said, turning to Kroft. We couldn't afford to wait for a response. We had to move fast.
I clenched my phone tighter as I tried to call Khai again, but it went straight to voicemail. My stomach tightened in frustration and worry. This was bad. I quickly left a voicemail, hoping she'd check it as soon as she could:
