I was particularly surprised by his words since no one else in the house including Charlie called him by his name but I shrugged off the thought.
‘Brian, I will get out there and find that phone. Whether it’s okay with you or not’
He seemed shocked that I dared to call him by his name but I was not so sure anymore because the look disappeared less than a second later. He dipped his hands in his pocket and brought out the broken, out-of-shape cell phone in a cellophane bag. ‘I went out to find it yesterday.’
I gasped in shock ‘Thank you’ and reached out to grab the phone. However, he pulled it back and tossed it into a trashcan. I gasped again and went after the phone not minding if there was dirt in the trash can or not. Thankfully, there was not. ‘What is wrong with you?! ’ I yelled. Unfortunately, at that moment, tears were clouding my eyes.
‘What? Are you crying because of dumb cell phone?’
Why would I not cry? The cell phone was broken in half now, with the wires sticking out. This way, I could not fix it again. I bit my lower lip and went out of is sight to Nanny Lisa’s room. I felt very upset about the phone. Ha just made it harder for me to find out exactly what happened. I did not leave the room even for lunch but I went downstairs for dinner. I noticed that Brian was not at the table. As I passed by his chamber that evening, I overheard him and Charlie talking. He had sent the phone to an engineer. I felt warmth in my heart but I immediately shrugged it off. It was only normal that he had it fixed since he was the one who worsened the situation. I was even thankful that he did so. This way, the cost of the phone will not come out of my pocket and it would make it easier for me to find accommodation when I got out of there.
That evening, I spent the night in Nanny Lisa’s room since the new recruit, who happened to be a young woman with her baby, had moved to a spare room. Nanny Lisa told me that she ran away from her husband’s house because he constantly maltreated her and her little baby. I told Nanny Lisa about my past. On this day, breakfast was unusually not served at the table. It was a Saturday so Nanny Lisa went out to buy groceries. I had not seen Brian throughout the day. We had not even had much contact since the phone incident. I was bored so I decided to take a stroll around the house. I was by the poolside when I suddenly heard a long, thin wail. I turned around and traced the sound to the gym where I saw the new recruit’s baby in a baby stroller in the gym but there was no one else in sight. I took the baby in my arms and rocked it back and forth after putting a pacifier in it but it did not stop crying. Just then, its mother appeared from a distance.
‘Sorry. I just went to the bathroom.’
‘It’s nothing. She looks hungry though, even the pacifier did not shut her up.’
‘I ran out of formula last night.’
‘I think Nanny Lisa got some more.’
‘Alright, I’ll go check… I’m Eleanor, by the way’
‘I’m Celine.’ I said. Just then, I noticed a shirtless Brian coming in the distance. I could not help but notice his firm, well-defined structure of his muscular body. I did not notice that I was string until he spoke.
‘What? Haven’t seen a man before?’
I was about to reply when Eleanor spoke ‘Could you please hold her for me? I’ll go get her formula.’
Thankful that something had distracted me from Brian, I was about to collect the baby when he stopped me. ‘Celine, go get the formula and bring me a shirt while you are at it. ’ Then he turned to Eleanor ‘you and I will talk.’
‘Okay.’ Eleanor said while giving me an apologetic look. I bit my lower lip and went ahead to carry out my latest order. I returned minutes later and what I saw surprised me. Eleanor was adjusting her baby’s stroller and the baby had fallen into a comfortable silence. Brian was rocking the baby in his arms gently with a slight frown on his face. I could not believe that he had that side to him. I walked up to him and collected the baby, feeding it while Brian and its mother went to the other side of the room to talk. As soon as Janice was done with her bottle, she slept off. Brian returned with Eleanor much later. She took the baby from me and left. She informed me later on that she was leaving the next day. From what I gathered from her, she was an uprising model and actor when her husband made her quit so that they could start a family. Anyways, that is another story. Brian stood in front of me looking t me for a while before he spoke
‘I just called the engineer fixing your phone.’
‘What did he say?’
‘It can be fixed, but it’s going to cost a lot of money since the phone is an old model and the parts are not readily available.’
‘I thought it could not be fixed because the phone went through serious damage.’
‘The hard drive wasn’t destroyed so the information in it should still be intact.’
‘Oh.’ I said. Realizing how close we were to each other. I subconsciously shifted backwards and threw his shirt at him. He did not make any effort to catch the shirt as it hit his torso and landed on the floor.
‘Follow me.’ He said and moved to a corner. He lay on a mat and started doing the crunches, asking me to hold down his feet. Begrudgingly, I bent down and held his feet. From the corner of my eye, I saw Nanny Lisa through the glass windows. She was laughing probably because of how ridiculous I looked. ‘Don’t let go’ he said and sat up, staring intently at me.
‘What are you looking at?’ I asked
He leaned in without a word and held my chin up between his thumb and index finger. We locked eyes. I was staring at his hazel green eyes with gold strands. His shiny hair fitted his pale skin perfectly. ‘Celine, I want you to be my personal assistant.’ He blurted, bringing me back to reality. ‘You will be my personal assistant.’ He repeated.
