All in the Name of Love

Jason is sleeping in Henry's room. He wanted to sleep on the couch, but mom and dad wouldn't let him. So they got the extra mattress and put it in Henry's room.

Henry didn't mind. Not one bit. Henry loved Jason like a brother. Heck, he basically was our brother. Always there.

I couldn't sleep. I tried, but I just couldn't. Was it because the person that bullied me is at my house. Sleeping a couple doors down, or was it because I still liked him? I don't know. And I honestly don't care.

I went to the kitchen to get some water. It was one in the morning. Still dark. Everyone was still asleep. Or so I thought.

The kitchen light was on. Mom and Dad's door is shut, so it isn't them. Henry doesn't get up and neither does Bianca.

I found my answer when the person came out of the kitchen in his boxers with a cup of water in hand.

"Jason what are you doing up?"

"I was thirsty. What are you doing up?"

"I couldn't sleep. Went down to get water."

It was frightening talking to him. He scares me. And I believe he knew it.

"Okay. Um, I'll get it for you then."

"You don't have to. You need to get back to bed. I'll get it."

I went in the kitchen with him following me.

I got my water and took sips of it. Jason still standing there. Looking at me.

"What?"

"Umm, nothing." He quickly looked away, face blushing in embarrassment.

"Okay."

After we finished our water, we just stood there. Afraid to move. It feels like if we moved, then we'll wake up and forget that we weren't just enemies. We were friends. But a stupid kiss ruined that.

"Kaitlyn, what I said the summer before freshman year, I didn't mean it." Then he left to go back to bed.

....

The next morning, I woke up to the smell of eggs. Mom and Dad never cooks.

I went downstairs and to the kitchen. Jason was at the stove, cooking. Bianca and Henry was at the island and Mom and Dad were in the living room, drinking coffee.

"Good morning," Jason said as he turned around to put eggs on the plates. There were six plates. One for Mom, one for Dad, one for Henry, one for Bianca, one for me, and one for him. I was shocked.

"Good morning."

"Here's your coffee," Jason said, handing me a cup filled with that brown liquid. He knows I love coffee.

"Thank you."

"Kaitlyn, I have to go to work, can you make sure Bianca and Henry get to school?" Mom asked.

"Yeah, sure. When will you get back?"

"Later. I love you all. And Jason, you are free to stay as long as you think your dad is around."

Then she left.

"I have to go too. Henry, do you want a ride?" Dad asked.

Henry nodded his head, and got off his stool.

They left. And now there were three.

"Umm, Bianca let me get ready and we'll go, alright?" I asked. She nodded.

I went up to my room to change. When I was putting on my makeup, Jason was at the door.

"About last night..."

"Don't. I don't want to know what you want to say. Just please."

"So is this how's it going to be? You won't let me apologize?"

"Jason, you had your chance. You blew it by making me look bad, by telling everyone to stay away. I let you stay last night knowing that you will just do it again. Look, you can stay as long as you need to, but don't talk to me."

"I miss you. I miss your smart attitude, your smile, your laugh. I miss my best friend."

"Should have thought of that before."

I finished and went around him. He stopped me.

"Please can we start over. You can hate me, I don't care. I just want to start over."

I laughed. "You have to prove it first."

....

It was lunch. I was in the cafeteria with Bianca. Until one of the guys from my class came.

"Why are you sitting with this loser?" He asked Bianca.

"Why don't you get out of my face?" She replied.

"Oh don't be like that," the guy said, as he tried to grab her.

I put his arm behind his back and twisted.

"Don't you ever touch my sister. Got it?"

"Fine, fine. Just let go."

I let him go then kicked him in his balls.

"Leave," someone said from behind.

I turned around and saw Jason standing there, looking at the guy.

The guy ran away. Well tried to at least.

"Are you okay?" I asked Bianca.

"Yeah, I think so."

"I'll make sure he doesn't mess with y'all again," Jason said.

"Yeah, sure."

....

We were at the house. School let out an hour ago. Dad had to stay to grade papers. So it was just me, Bianca, Henry, and Jason.

"Kaitlyn, can you make us something. Please," Henry asked.

"Henry how old are you?"

"13."

"You can make yourself something."

"But I'm lazy, and you're older," Henry smiled.

"Little brat," I muttered.

"Hey how about I make us all something?" Jason asked.

"Are you sure? I mean I can make it?" I said.

"I'm sure. You need to do homework."

"Fine."

I went up to my room. I can't believe he acts like he's my boss.

There was a knock on the door.

"What?"

"Can I come in?" Jason asked.

"Yeah, sure."

Jason came in with a tray with two sandwiches and juice on it.

"What's with the tray?"

"I told you I'll get y'all something to eat."

"I thought you hated me."

"I don't hate you. It's just... I don't know how to respond. I freaked out when...when we kissed. And I didn't know how to respond. I'm an idiot for saying that it was a mistake. I shouldn't have said that. It was the best kiss in my life."

"I don't know what to say."

"I just wanted you to know. You're not the problem. I am." With that, he put the tray down, and left the room.
